I am amazed that a person requesting a time consuming look-up from census records by a volunteer and then thinks it is the volunteer that should spend their precious time by sending emails to find out just what it is that the requester wants. Undoubtably, these "asking"people have never spent any time looking through census records. Since a great many records are on line, perhaps instead of complaining about a "free"service, they should get off their duff and hire a paid researcher to do their work for them or go to a LDS Family Research Center(these are located all over the nation and can be accessed online as well before complaining about volunteers who are overwhelmed by people who have no idea of the effort it takes to locate census information. I suggest that all of you people who have never looked up someone on a census record, try it. Staring at page after page of old handwritten information looking for a certain name and family is not much fun. To the party who thinks the volunteer has any obligation to send them an email about their request and says,"..on another list where I was ignored a lot" I can only say that I can understand why. They seem to think the world has an obligation to to just drop everything and run right out and take care of their 'Wants". If you don't know how to do the research, they have good books on Genealogy research in public libraries and there are free lessons and helpful hints an rootsweb. And a statement may sound clear to that party, but the overiding rule of conversation is that the speaker has the resonsiblity to make sure the message is clear and understood, not the other way around. Doesn't anyone believe in the old adage of"God helps those that help themselves" anymore?????? I have no idea who the "list manager" for this list but I say, Three cheers for all list managers and volunteers, hip, hip,HOORAY,hip, hip,HOORAY,and hip,hip HOORAY!! Without them genealogy would be one heck of lot more difficult. I agree with Betty, and think that Will is just a tad over the line with his remarks, forgetting that many people are new to this hobby, and they really don't know anything about looking up census records. Some of what he says makes sense, but was delivered in a patronizing manner that could put off some people from trying again to get the information they need.
