Also watch for the abbreviation of "ditto" which was often used instead of the " symbol or the written word. That one is "Do", and if you aren't familiar with it, it might cause you to think that it's an abbreviation for a state when used in the place of birth column. For instance: John Brown 36 Farmer Alabama Annie 35 Do George 5 Do The above Do's indicate that both Annie and George were also born in Alabama, and was used as a shortcut for the word "ditto". I don't know why it wouldn't have been just as simple to write "AL" instead of "DO".
