Hi Linda; Thanks, but this is not him. My John was born in TN and homesteaded in Marshal county in 1862, applied for a Land Patent in 1876. In the 1880 census his wife was Emily L. Black........parents Joseph Black and Sarah Laney. I have also found the Merritt name spelled Merrett, Merrit and Merritt.........so any one might be him. I have no middle initial on him, not even on the Land Patent. John and Emily's children in the 1880 census were: James William, son, b 1876 AL (my grandfather) Sarah E. b. 1878 AL Joanna b. 1880 AL In my grandfather's obituary I found two other siblings who must have been born after the 1880 census and possibly to a different mother Jesse, birthdate unknown E.M., birthdate unknown This is all the info I have on my ggrandfather John Merritt. Warm regards from Texas; Nancy Merritt P.S..............oops! Sorry, next time I will put year/county/Surname, it was late I was tired and my brain cramped....hahaha. . -------Original Message------- From: [email protected] Date: Monday, March 29, 2004 6:29:56 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [AL-CEN] 1900/Marshall/MERRITT Nancy, Do you know the names of any of the children of this couple? That was the only John Merritt in Marshall County, Nancy. I checked Merrett, Merritt, Meritt, Merit, Meret, Marritt, Marrit, and all citizens named John or Emily in 1900 Marshall County, Alabama. Is it possible that John died prior to 1900 and Emily remarried? I found a Jessie Merrett in 1900 Crenshaw County, age 21, born AL. He was listed as HOH with his mother, M. Mrs., age 39, born May 1861. She had had two children, and both were living. Also in the household was Jessie's brother, Willis, age 12, and Jessie's grandmother, Sallie Merrett, age 70, born in SC. Sorry I wasn't able to find them.
