Thank you a lot for the info, Karen. I wanted to see exactly who was in the household with Stephen. Unfortunately, no one has been able to prove that William is the father of Stephen. This has been a very hard family to put together because so many Gardners migrated from South Carolina to Montgomery during this time period and we also haven't been able to put them together in South Carolina. I'm looking for the family of Stephen Gardner, caucasian, born about 1805 in South Carolina. Thanks for your help. Melissa
Thank you for your reply, Karen. But, with the exception of being in WW II, Johnnie lived his whole life in Montgomery, Alabama. He was born on 12/24/1911 and died in 1969. According to a family bible, he married 1st to Mary Archie Moseley in 1929 and that marriage ended in divorce. He married a 2nd time to Inez Pitts on 11/14/1936. I don't know that I'm related to Zach Benefield, but it's certainly a possibility. The furthest I've been able to trace mine back is possibly to Georgia about 1795 and I don't know either of their names but their children were Mary Benefield, David Benefield, Rufus Benefield, and my great great grandfather Jacob Benefield. They came to Henry County, Alabama, according to the 1850 Henry County Census. I don't know anything about Mary, but I have some info on the rest of them, landing in Barbour and Henry and surrounding counties in Alabama. If you want more info, just email me and I'll send it to you. Hi, My family is related to some Benefield's. I did a little checking yesterday on your John Benefield. I did find that a John Benefield was born on 5-28-1911 and died in May of 1976 in Tennessee. Lots of Benefields in Cleburne County Alabama. I found some old newspapers going back to the 1880's through 1929. Are you related to the Zach Benefield from Cleburne Alabama. He and a lot of his family is mentioned in the newspapers. I found them on Rootsweb. I will do some more looking today. Karen in Seattle
That's a huge family mystery! My dad died in 2001, so can't get any info there (only he and his brother in the family and Johnny died in the 70's) and no one ever mentioned a 1st marriage. I've posted messages in the Benefield forums and in the Moseley forums, but no hits after a couple of years. The folks who are left in the family always assumed he was only married once. I didn't even know anything about it until I found my grandmother's bible...the skeletons we find! I don't know how much info you have on the Moseleys but here is the only tree I could find for them: http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:1721562&id=I7529 Johnny nor Mary are in the Moseley household in 1930. I see neither under any surname similar to Benefield in 1930 (anywhere in the US). The Moseleys and the Benefields are in Montgomery county in 1920 and 1930 but never very close together. I appreciate your help, too. But that is James and not Johnny in the 1930 census because James is my dad (born in 1921). I couldn't find him in 1930 either but that 1930 record that Linda posted is his family and I am wondering if the James age 8 is really Johnny age 18. Stranger mistakes have happened.
