Thank you for the look up. I am very excited over your findings, a little confused though. I do know that my grandfather died in 1919, in Gadsden, Etowah Co., AL. My father was almost 7 mos. old when he died. Also, I have his death certificate that I ordered Oct. 2003 from Alabama Center for Health Statistics. I have found 2 mistakes on it so far, one being that his age at death was 23 years and 4 months old, in fact he was 23 yrs.and 8 mos. and 5 days old. The other thing, and this is one that excites me, they had my grandmother's first name wrong and on looking at it, I thought perhaps they accidently typed in my great grandmother's name for my grandmother and just misspelled my grandmother's first name. With the info on these census' it may very well be. The only thing now throwing me off is that it states that his father's name was John, not James. But I see that on the census in 1920 the father, J.R. GANN was a laborer-car work. My grandfather at the time of ! his death was according to the death certificate, a builder and freight car repairer and worked at the Gadsden Car Works. How interesting! I notice on the 1920 census J.W. GANN is not listed. Also, I did not mention in the first post, because I am new to this and did not know what all I could put in, was the fact that my sister just recently gave me a list of names , which she received from our grandmother, Sabra Jane Burttram GANN, on her death bed a list of names of GANN's. She did not say who they were, brothers, sisters, uncles or aunts. It has always puzzeled us as to why we were not given more information on our family. We are definately GANN's , as we have participated in the GANN DNA project and are a perfect match with known GANN's . Well on to the other names, they are Albert E. GANN, who possibly died in Gadsden, AL; Earnest GANN; Clarence GANN; Behula or Beula GANN (could be Buena GANN????) and she was suppose to have lived and died in Gadsden, AL; Mary ! GANN, could this be Hette M.??? or perhaps short for Martha??? ; Clara GANN; and Maude GANN or is she Hettie M. for Maude??? The census even though they say 1900 , 1910 or 1920 are not always taken that exact year, are they? If they are not then the age for my grandfather would be close, also for Ray GANN. I have 2 photos of Ray one when he was about 4 and then one which I believe was taken about the time of my grandfather's death and he appears to be approximately 12 to 14 years old, and on the 1920 census he is listed as 11. I have a photo of Glenn GANN, it's the name on the back of the photo , in each case, and he is about 1 yr or 1 1/2 yrs. old , so that would be close with the son on the 1920 census listed as Linard age 8. I also have a photo of one of his sisters, name unknown, and it was taken the summer of 1939 in Detroit, Michigan and she appears to be in her 30's. I know this because my mother told me that our dad in the summer of went to spend the summer with her. However Mom did not ever know her name. The only GANN's we have known are just ourselves (siblings and our Dad), t! his is the reason I don't know any more than I do. I apologize if this is too lengthy, and I do appreciate your help or any other help I receive. Thank you again. Linda

Hi Linda, I looked at that death record for John William Gann in Etowah county(1919) but it offers no additional clues. I'm somewhat at a loss to find the family that exactly matches your data. There is a Gann family that matches in a few respects. First, I think their son John W. Gann is probably the one who died in Gadsden. Second, they do have a son named Ray. That's pretty slim as matches go but I see no better possibility if you're convinced that your John William Gann is the one who died in Gadsden in 1919. All birthplaces are Alabama in all of the below census records. 1900 Marshall Co, AL, Red Apple Pct #20, page 205 James R. Gann 28 married 9 yrs, farmer Ceclie R. (wife) 30 married 9 yrs, 4 kids, 4 living Marthy A. (dau) 7 James A. (son) 4 John W. (son) 3 Beuvia V (dau) 6 mos 1910 Marshall Co, AL, Red Apple beat, page 44 James R. Maud (dau) 18 clerk - ? Clara (dau) 16 Homer (son) 13 Ray (son) 11 Linard (son) 8 Perhaps your family information has mixed up some generations. By following the brother George H. back to 1900, I find that James and George's father's name is John W. Gann. I can't read the mother's name. It looks a little like Ann but it's too messy too tell. Maybe Sarah was Sarah Ann????? Linda Stiles wrote: > Hello, > I am new to the site. I would like a census look-up. The best look up for me would be either 1900 or 1910. Hello, I am new to the site. I would like a census look-up. The best look up for me would be either 1900 or 1910. I am searching for my grandfather's family, and these would be the best years.
