I have a couple of DUKE families from around Autauga Co, Montgomery, and Coosa Counties, Alabama. I am particular interested in the DUKES who married into the Callaway family, specifically a Mastin or Masculin Duke who married a Betty Callaway before 1830. I also have a Thomas A and Mary Duke family who had several children including Calvert, Dosh, Monch. Thomas was b/ca 1820 and d/aft 1880 in Coosa Co, AL. Any info appreciated. Thanks! Briana S. Felch

Bill, Regarding Heritage Quest, they do index other surnames that are in the same household but are not Head. I found several of my family on the 1900 index, for example, living with a son or daughter who is Head and they were shown as father-in-law or aunt or whatever. I really hesitate to have any input on this discussion because I depend on you and Linda and the others to help me with the years that HQ doesn't include and help me you certainly have! I live in Blount Co., AL and have very few resources available. As an out-of-county resident, I pay $20 a year for a membership to Jefferson Co. library system so that I can utilize the Birmingham Public Library research facilities, check out books, etc. My membership card number allows me to access HQ online from my home which in itself is worth the $20, but still doesn't give me access to 1850 and the other years as you stated. Thank you again for all the help you all give folks like me who are a bit far away from good research facilities! Requesting a lookup for Thomas BEARDEN, b. abt. 1857, or ' 58. He will be married by 1883, or ' 84. Trying to learn who Thomas' parents & family were & where they lived. Thank you, in advance, for your time & help with this lookup request. Jack
I just wanted to "ditto" what Bill says. Some access points to HeritageQuest can be found for less than $30 a year. Shop around. HQ, free through my local library is the best buy, but $20-30 is way less than you will pay at one of the other "Big-3" sites. If census is your main interest at this point, Heritage Quest has the best rate. When you graduate to "more than just census", there will be plenty of time to compare prices and features of the other two (Genealogy.com and Ancestry) who are owned by the same company (MyFamily.com). ----- Original Message ----- From: wmcconne@bellsouth.net To: AL-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, August 03, 2005 2:39 PM Subject: Re: [AL-CEN] DUKE family info wanted. OK, here's my descriptions of the ones I have used: genealogy.com - haven't used them in awhile. Requesting a lookup for a BEARDEN family in AL. They have a son named Willard BEARDEN, b. abt 1888 or ' 89 in their household. As far as I know, discussing them is fine, but recommending "one" as being better then another isn't. I don't see why you couldn't give "Your oppinion" on them tho. I would also suggest that if your are considering giving your opinion on these, to be sure to include ALL sources that you have an oppinion on (like the NARA information, HeritageQuest, LDS as well as using your local libraries & don't leave out Printed forms). This might actually be a good "line" of discussion to let ev eryone know what there options are for doing there own lookups. If this is going to involve the "where to obtain info from" I don't see why the various prgraoms you mention could not ALSO be discussed.. Hi Joe, If you haven't already done so you can go thru you local library to get access to Heritage Quest census. It's free but they don't have 1930 for all states nor do they have the 1880 but you can get that thru the Morman website. Hello, all. I am now (after about 5 years of being a 'newbie') going to attempt to study the census in some depth. My first 'project' will be the job of finding all the DUKE surnames which were listed in the AL census records, from 1790 forward to 1880 or (perhaps) later. Other states' records will also be checked, but the bulk of my 'recent' family records are in AL, and before that, in SC. The most recent are in TX, and I may have most of those, now, thanks to the kind help of several fellow seekers!! What I hope to learn, first, is the proper and more successful way to gather those names from the state-wide records of the US census data now available, and where the best place is, to seek that data. Then, if I can 'get a handle' to that extent, I hope to start with the first census and go forward, seeking all the first names of the heads of all DUKE households which are listed in the 1790 list. I am not at all sure how long that will take!! But it is a starting point!! All suggestions are needed and sought!! Thanks!! Good luck on your project! 1820 is the earliest that you can get for Alabama. You need to subscribe to an online census service(maybe more than one). There are pluses and minuses for each. Write me directly and I'll give you the scoop. I don't think we are supposed to discuss them on this list..? Listmom - do you know if we can? Also many libraries that have genealogy sections have access to several of the services. A list of all the Dukes in Alabama would be interesting but even more interesting and challenging would be to download all the Alabama related Duke family trees from rootsweb and try to connect them together. Free genealogy programs are available to do this. Most will automatically create website pages for the completed tree. thehornguy wrote: > Hello, all. > > I am now (after about 5 years of being a 'newbie') going to attempt to study > the census in some depth. > > My first 'project' will be the job of finding all the DUKE surnames which > were listed in the AL census records, from 1790 forward to 1880 or (perhaps) > later. This sounds like it is the right family. Perhaps the census taker missed them in 1850. I really appreciate all your work. I am going to assume his name was John H. Thank you very much. Kirkley in Sumter Co, AL. His age is 20 to 30, wife's age is 20 to 30 and there is one male child age less than 5. This would be right for James. This is the only Kirkley family listed in Georgia or Alabama in 1840 that fits as far as ages and children. Of course there could be others with some variation of the Kirkley name. Both James and Richard named their first son John. In fact, Richard's son is John Hugh. I just am unable to find to find this family listed in 1850 to confirm the father's name as John. My guess would be that they are in Sumter co., AL in 1850 if the ages and birthplaces are correct on subsequent census records.

Thanks to you and Linda for trying to find this family. I do appreciate it. Nancy
Nancy, I keep coming back to this request, thinking something might change, perhaps, but I am having absolutely no luck finding this family ANYwhere in 1850, in spite of trying every search technique in the book. If Ada lived long enough to have a death certificate, that might give you an Alabama county of birth, which would be a tremendous help. Sorry I've not been able to help with this one. Hopefully Bill, or someone else on the list, will have better luck. Would it be possible to find her with her husband in 1850 Alabama? Elizabeth KIRKLEY, age 33, born in North Carolina. Son James, 14, born Georga Dau Ada, 4, born Alabama Plus others I do not know the names of. I realize that this is a difficult request and I thank you for your help. I had no luck either. I'll keep it on my to do list and relook when I get a chance.
