    3. I agree with Betty, and think that Will is just a tad over the line with his remarks, forgetting that many people are new to this hobby, and they really don't know anything about looking up census records. Some of what he says makes sense, but was delivered in a patronizing manner that could put off some people from trying again to get the information they need. I think email works both ways, rather than ignor a request, send an email and request more precise information, Maybe that was all the person knows, or maybe they are new and don't know what to include. On another list I have been ignored a lot, but I thought it was because no volunteer was on the list at the time. Forgive me if I am wrong, but "John Smith 1880 Father David" sent to a specific state, would mean to me, person doesn't know what county and they want a lookup in state for any county for 1880, and John Smith would show up in household of the parents they were looking for, thinking that there is a master search that would give the name, county, for that year. That would show all John Smiths with father David and they could choose logical one. Works both ways, person asking for lookup erred, person doing lookup ignored request and erred also. Thanks for all the good work all the volunteers do and we do have wonderful volunteers on this list. We have some who are as "GOOD AS GOLD" as I have stated before. Without someone asking for help with their search, we would not need a list. Not all doing research are professionals, at some time or another we all get frustrated because seems like our ancestors just arrived by spaceship, stayed a while , left their mark and boarded the spaceship and disapeared. Happy New Year to All, I hope the new year brings all our brick walls down Betty

    3. Maureen, Thanks for trying to make our lives simpler. Those of us with census records are constantly frustrated by emails or list requests that say "John Smith, 1880, father David." We are left to decide if John was born in 1880, do they want the 1880 census, and just where do John and David live? So many incomplete request go ignored, simply because the volunteers don't know where to start looking. I do lookups for 6 states, several counties in each state, so I get about 20 requests daily. It's great to have a list mom that realizes that we have lives beyond genealogy, and tries to help us out as much as possible. Thanks for all your hard work this past year, Maureen! Happy New Year! Good Luck in your research and enjoy the lists ;) CENSUS-LOOKUP Lists were Established 11 October 2000 Guidelines for posting to the lists: EMAIL SUBJECT LINES: COUNTY,YEAR,SURNAME NO FLAMING or you will be unsubbed without notice. By this I mean not only being rude or mean to each other but there will be NO and I do mean NO debating here about the Census Projects. This list is for everyone who wants to research. NO General requests such as "all Smiths in all counties" Be specific, Name the County, Family you are looking for and also the year. Try to supply as much info as possible. LIMIT your requests to ONE PER CENSUS YEAR and SURNAME My Mama taught me that Thank you and Please are always nice too :) MOST IMPORTANTLY Hang in there and don't get discouraged if your not answered right away, these lists will be a great asset to our research as they continue to grow. I am encouraging everyone to send this email to their surname and county mailing lists as well as to our cousins. Finally, If you have the material to help a fellow researcher, please use it. Thanks, Maureen A few people have emailed me asking how to sign up for the new lists and what to do. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. All lists are XX-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L-request@rootsweb.com (regular mode) XX-CENSUS-LOOKUP-D-request@rootsweb.com (digest mode) The XX is to be removed and the two letter abbreviation for the state you are looking in added in its place. Examples: MI-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L-request@rootsweb.com CA-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L-request@rootsweb.com IL-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L-request@rootsweb.com 2. So, send an email to the one of your choice (make sure to have the state). Do not put anything in the subject line. In the body of the email write only: subscribe Then send it on :) 3. POSTING to the new census lists: A. Send it to XX-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L@rootsweb.com (supply the two letter state code for the XX again) B: Subject line MUST have the following: County/Year/Surname Example: Saginaw/1850/Smith C: In the body of the email: List whom you are looking for. Supply as much information as you can. Birthplace, ages, occupation, etc. D: Mail it on! That's it folks :) I hope that helped. I have put the list of states and two letter codes below for you. AL Alabama AK Alaska AZ Arizona AR Arkansas CA California CO Colorado CT Connecticut DC District Of Columbia DE Delaware FL Florida GA Georgia HI Hawaii ID Idaho IL Illinois IN Indiana IA Iowa KS Kansas KY Kentucky LA Louisiana ME Maine MD Maryland MA Massachusetts MI Michigan MN Minnesota MS Mississippi MO Missouri MT Montana NE Nebraska NV Nevada NH New Hampshire NJ New Jersey NM New Mexico NY New York NC North Carolina ND North Dakota OH Ohio OK Oklahoma OR Oregon PA Pennsylvania RI Rhode Island SC South Carolina SD South Dakota TN Tennessee TX Texas UT Utah VT Vermont VA Virginia WA Washington (state) WV West Virginia WI Wisconsin WY Wyoming To contact the administrator of this mailing list, send mail to AL-CENSUS-LOOKUP-admin@rootsweb.com. Would you please post the welcome letter again. It is so easy to forget the rules, when all we have on our minds is Find the ancestors. Thanks Betty

    1. [AL-CEN] Apoligize for asking for help
    2. PLEASE re-read your welcome letter to the list, it states ONLY one request per day per email..... The Kind people that do the look ups would have NOTHING else to do but lookups if people like you kept asking them to "cater to YOUR lookup request's, good lord, I could keep them going for years just on one of my lines... Think about this & Please apoligize to the list for your major blunder. Maureen List MOM/ADMIN According to the rules, I must apoligize for asking help in census lookups for more than one county at a time all in one day. According the list mom, I can only ask for one look per day. So to you all that do lookups for people whom have no access to the census, I am sorry for asking you to do a look up in more than one all in one day. I know it takes time, because I do lookups my self for the state of Illinois, Alexander County. I do know it is timely to help others......but I enjoy it. So, please for give me for asking for more than one county in one day. Angie
