    1. 1850/Choctaw/Whitehead
    2. I would appreciate a look up for John Joseph (JJ) Whitehead from NC and wife Martha L. from GA . John would be around 37 and Martha around 35. There should be at least one child. Any and all information would be appreciated. Cathryn

    1. Re: [AL-CEN] 1840/Choctaw/Whitehead
    2. Linda Murray
    3. Cathryn, Choctaw wasn't formed until 1847, so there is no 1840 census for that county. There are also no Joseph or JJ Whiteheads indexed for any county in 1840 Alabama, but there are several Johns. One enumerated in Henry County indicated a John Whitehead in the 40 to 50 year age range - one enumerated in 1840 Macon County gives age in the 30-40 age range, and a Jonathan Whitehead in 1840 Sumter County was aged 70 to 80. None of these appear to be the one you need aged 20-30, and of course, birthplace and names of other family members are not given until 1850, so there's no way to search for one with a wife named Martha or any Whitehead born in North Carolina. There are also no JJ Whiteheads indexed in 1840 Georgia - one Joseph shown as enumerated in Habersham County, but that one's age was given as in the 60 to 70 age range. The only John Whitehead indexed in 1840 Georgia was in Burke County and in the 50-60 year age range. Sorry I wasn't able to help. 3. Linda, Thank you so much. Someone had pointed out to me that 1850 Lowndes was online after I sent the request, so I did find the information. However, I do like to compare the online transcriptions with someone else's interpretation whenever possible, since reading and interpreting census records is a real challenge for all of us. Your information serves as verification of the transcribed information and I do appreciate it very much. 3. Glad to be able to help, David. One very old rule of thumb to keep in mind when you find conflicting information. When in doubt, use the source closest to the subject. John's father says in 1850 that he was born in NC, which overrides what anybody else said later. If I were you (and of course, I'm not), I'd go with NC for Matthew Manning's birthplace. Later!
