My great-grandparents, Willis P. Lawrence and Mary Margaret Cox, were both born in Alabama, he in 1848 and she in 1852. They lived in Chambers County and were near Fredonia in the 1870 census. My grandfather, Charlie Mathis Lawrence, was born in Alabama. Both he and his twin, Walter Madison Lawrence, moved to Georgia as adults. I would appreciate any help in locating the graves of Willis and Mary. Thanks, Pam McClure
Past researchers have claimed that Lawrence Hoots, who died 1 Sep 1878, is buried in Lamar County, AL, near Vernon. Problem is that none of his direct descendants have been able to find any proof of that. A likely place would seem to have been Shiloh Episcopal Methodist Church, since his son Lawrence Hoots Jr. was baptized there and, between 1844 and 1884, at least, most of Lawerence Hoots Sr.'s family were on the rolls there. But no one has found his grave there (and, as far as I know, no one has had access to burial records of the church). Also, no other members of the family seem to be buried there. Lawrence's 3rd spouse, Polly Ann (Murphy) Hoots, survived him until Sep 1905 but there's no record of where she is buried either that has been found. I've had the feeling they would have been buried together. Polly Ann and Lawrence Sr. had three children: Lawrence A. Hoots (Jr.), born 1863, who is buried in Itawamba Co, MS; Eliza "Rilla" born 1865, married George Walden; she died in 1946 and is buried with her spouse at Mt. Pleasant Freewill Baptist Church in Lamar Co.; and Sarah Elizabeth b 1870, who was living with her sister Rilla in 1900 in Lamar Co., but no other information is known. Polly Ann (possibly Doster) Murphy had two children by William Murphy when she married Lawrence Hoots in 1862 in what was then Fayette Co, later Lamar. John and Mary Murphy are shown in the 1870 census living with Lawrence and Polly in what was then called Sanford Co, but became Lamar Co in 1877. John Murphy is buried at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Vernon, Lamar Co., AL. Lawrence's oldest son (by his second spouse), William Riley Hoots, died Jan 1905 and is buried at Mt. Zion Cemetery on the Zion-Shiloh Road between Vernon and Milport, according to some cousins. The second spouse of Lawrence was likely named Susannah, and there's no record of a burial location for her -- she died after the 1860 census and before Lawrence married Polly in Dec 1862. You can see from these proofs the likelihood of Lawrence Hoots Sr. as well as his spouse Polly having been buried in Lamar Co, AL. But where? Can anyone help, please?
Thanks for the reminder, Dee. April 20 is the birthdate of genealogy researcher, Delilah Evans. I am saddened to learn that she died on February 28, 2018. Obituary for Delilah Evans: Delilah Evans, 78, of Huntsville, AL passed away February 28, 2018. There was a graveside service Friday, March 2, 2018 at Highland Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers make donations to breast cancer awareness. http://www.pattersonfuneralhomes.com/obituaries/Delilah-Evans/#!/Obituary As you look online at various Lists@rootsweb.com associated with Alabama & Georgia, you will note that Delilah made contributions over a period of many years. She shared information on individuals, towns, graveyards, history, etc. She was eager to assist others in their family research. She was willing to do look ups from her extensive library of reference books. She located and sent Death Certificates, newspaper articles, books, etc. by mail. Delilah was a wonderful genealogical support to my family, providing valuable information on my Alston, Fortson, Eiland [Hitchcock/King], Pruett, Thornton, Turman family lines. We enjoyed her friendship for many years. She blessed my life and that of many others. She shared info. on her father, Thomas Gordon Evans when he preached in Sheffield, Ala. "Tom Evans, a local minister, preached on WMSD (later WLAY)" She owned a postcard of the radio station tower which is regarded as a Historic Landmark by the Alabama Historical Society. It is featured on: "Remembering the Shoals The past is the present for future generations who do not know their history." https://rememberingtheshoals.wordpress.com/2013/04/21/this-is-a-1930s-photo-of-the-wmsd-radio-station-tower-located-in-sheffield-colbert-county-alabama/ "This is a 1930s photo of the WMSD radio station tower located in Sheffield, Colbert County, Alabama that mentions Tom Evans." In 2006, Delilah posted recollections on DEBORAH LEE EVANS, ending with: Acknowledgments: "None of us who are interested in our families’ journeys are without a debt of gratitude to the family historian, the storyteller and the researcher on whose prior work our version of history is based." These words are a fitting tribute to Delilah. Eugenia
Hello folks, and welcome back to RootsWeb's newly upgraded list system. If you are receiving this post it is because you are still a subscriber to this list, even though things have been pretty quiet due to a number of issues lately. The lists are back now, and I believe you will like the improvements that have been made. The most obvious improvement is a new RootsWeb login system, which you will find at the following link: http://home.rootsweb.ancestry.com/listindexes/setupmail Only one account per person is needed, and once you have created it you will be able to organize and manage all of your list subscriptions in one handy location. Like anything new there will be something of a learning curve in the beginning, but I really think you will like it for the new security and personalization features for your list subscriptions. And last but not least, please note my email address as List Owner immediately below this message and following my name. Also note the "List information" link below that, which will take you to the information page for this list, where you will find information to help you subscribe, unsubscribe, and some other things based on the current status of your new log in account. I welcome you back to the list, and look forward to working with you in the future tracking down our elusive ancestors. David E.
