Dearest Ardie, Let me tell you that today in NJ is beautiful. The temperature right now is around 60 degrees, clear blue sky without a cloud, slight breeze. Gorgeous! I wanted to tell you that I love you very much. I miss you very much. I'm going out after I eat my lunch and spend some time at the library but I know that my thoughts will be with you as they are practically all the time. Is there a solution? Forever, E.

Hello listers, Did someone say roll call? We are looking for information on two brothers that came from Sweden to Dawson, Alaska. Carl Leonard Carlson and Axel Gottfrid Carlson. Carl in coming to Dawson in the early days began mining on Poverty Bar in 1901 and later worked in partnership with Andrew Swanson on Hunker Creek. In later years he prospected in the Chandalar District. At the time of his death he was a U.S. Commissioner and post master at Chandalar. He died June 24, 1944 in Fairbanks and is buried in Birch Hill Cemetery in the pioneer section. We are currently awaiting the arrival for the death certificate of Axel to verify that this is Carls brother. Axel is also buried in Birch Hill Cemetery in the pioneer section. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Pointe/3377/ Thank you, Kim
Yes, I'm here too! My son's paternal grandmother was born in Fort Yukon, Alaska and was Gwich'in Athabaskan. Her name was Ann Marie JOHN and she was born in 1925. She was sent away to school as were many native children at that time, she did not go back and died in Anchorage in 1971. Her parents were Charlie and Sophia JOHN of Fort Yukon. I am interested in the Hudson's Bay Company as HBC established a trading post at Fort Yukon. Have you done any research in the HBC records? I would be interested to know how useful that would be. The family story is that after Charlie JOHN passed away Sophia JOHN remarried and she and her husband ran a trading post at Birch Creek. It leads me to believe that they may have been connected to HBC in Ft. Yukon. Hi List: This list must be new. I didn't find anything in the archives. My interests are: -- Whalley. My grandfather Frank Whalley went to Dawson City as did his brother and two cousins. Frank was the only one to go on to the Koyukuk and actually strike gold. Frank and Marie lived in Wiseman. -- Kokrine. Frank met and married Marie Kokrine, the daughter of Gregory Kokrine. Gregory Kokrine was a Finnish fur trader who came over with the Russians and when the U.S. bought Alaska, stayed and founded the trading post, later village of Kokrines on the Yukon River. -- Bettles. Gordon Bettles married another of Gregory Kokrine's daughters. Gordon was a real self-promoter and founded several trading posts in Alaska including Bettles on the Koyukuk. The claim is made (probably by Gordon) that he controlled half of the fur trade from interior Alaska. -- Mathews. Joe Mathews married another of Gregory Kokrine's daughters. Joe was a riverboat captain on the Yukon and Koyukuk rivers. -- Holy Cross and other mission schools. Gregory Kokrine sent his children to Holy Cross and other missions to be educated. -- Larion. Marie Kokrine believed that she was the grandaughter of Larion, a Koyukon Indian leader who led the raid at Nulato in 1851. For Ernestine--The best site I know of to search for Klondike miners is http://www.gold-rush.org/ghost-01.htm. You could also contact the museum in Dawson City, Yukon Territory, Canada. I believe that they will do research for a fee. As far as stories, there are many books written about the rush of '98, but it is hard to beat Pierre Berton's book "The Klondike Fever: The Life and Death of the Last Great Gold Rush", Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1975. I believe that there is a later edition that includes better source referencing. You can find used copies at http://www.abebooks.com./. Does anybody know about Berton's book "Klondike" that is advertised on the gold-rush web site, or has anyone ordered the CDRom? Is the book a reprint of his earler edition? List, what are your interests? William Whalley Camas, WA http://home.pacifier.com/~wwhalley/ wwhalley@pacifier.com
Hi List, I just recently joined this list. I'm interested in learning more about the 1898 gold rush to the Yukon. My late husband's father was one of the many people who left their homes in search of gold during those days. I would like to hear from anybody who might have interesting stories about that era or who could direct me to sites where I might find additional information. Does anybody have a listing of the miners who were there in 1898-99? Thanks, Ernestine Wark, NJ
Is anyone else on this list? William Whalley Camas, WA, USA
