I have the probate records relating to Grandfather's death in 1955. Your assessment of the land patent is puzzling. A township is 36 square miles. Townships are divided into (36) sections. Each section is one square mile. Each of the squares with a red number on the link you provided is a section, not a township. If you look in the upper right corner of the page in your link, you will see Section 10. Grandfather's homestead was located in that section. Seward Meridian, Township 17N, Range 2E, Section 10, Lots 1, 2, 3, and 4. These lots are aligned north to south along the western shore of the Matanuska River.
