He was a druggist in the states, and is listed as a miner who has been out of work for 6 months in the 1900 census. From census records it appears that he stayed in the Hope area until the time of his death (30 March 1923). He is buried in the pioneer cemetery in Hope. His is one of the three remaining marked graves in the cemetery, he is listed on findagrave memorial # 100784735 with a great photo by FAG volunteer Carrie Smith. What I am looking for is any info on his life in Hope, just about anything. Thanks Bill Knight williamknight57@yahoo.com Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: SETilleman Surnames: BARNHART, CARLICK, CARLOCK, CARLOUGH, DAVIES, FEENEY, MONSON, MOONEY, OLLESTAD, VINBERG, WINTER, WINTERS, YAKNAK Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.alaska.kenaicookinlet/344.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Reference: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carlough/146/mb.ashx This is an update to my Oct. 6, 2012, posting to the CARLOUGH Message Board titled "James CARLOUGH, b. ca. 1892, of New Jersey and Alaska," and my Sept. 23, 2012, posting titled, "Sorting out the various Cornelius CARLICKs, CARLOCKs, and CARLOUGHs," as well as other related postings, located at the following sites: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carlough/146/mb.ashx http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carlough/142/mb.ashx http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carlock/657/mb.ashx http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.alaska.kenaicookinlet/344/mb.ashx I have located a transcript of the death certificate for James Howard CARLOUGH which provided the names of his parents, the maiden name of his wife, his date of birth, the date of his death, and his age at the time of death. James was the son of James H. CARLOUGH (1869 - 1928) and Mary FEENEY (1872 - 1901). The elder James resided in Washington Township, Bergen Co., NJ, 1880; Paterson, Passaic Co., NJ, 1900; and Saddle River Township, Bergen Co., NJ, 1910. He is buried in Fair Lawn Memorial Cemetery, Fair Lawn, Bergen Co., NJ. Although Mary is referenced on James's tombstone, records show that she is buried in Airmont Lutheran Cemetery, Suffern, Rockland Co., NY. I had previously erroneously connected information for a different James CARLOUGH to James and Mary's son James Howard CARLOUGH. I have corrected this error and updated the GERLACH report on my home page to reflect these changes. I was also able to determine that the Cornelius CARLICK, b. ca. 1846, whom I had listed as son of Peter B. Westervelt CARLICK/CARLOCK/CARLOUGH and Maria/Mariah WINTER/WINTERS was the same person as Cornelius W. CARLOUGH, father of James H. CARLOUGH, and grandfather of James Howard CARLOUGH. James Howard CARLOUGH's death certificate identifies the maiden name of his wife Jessie as MOONEY. I have also located some additional information for James and Jessie's children. However, I have not yet been able to locate James Howard CARLOUGH and his family on the 1920 census. Please let me know if anyone is able to locate this family on the 1920 census. Following is the information I now have for James Howard CARLOUGH and his family: James Howard CARLOUGH (s/o James H. CARLOUGH, Cornelius W. CARLOUGH, Peter B. Westervelt CARLICK/CARLOCK/CARLOUGH), b. ca. Feb. 22, 1892, NJ; d. Feb. 11, 1935, Seattle, King Co., WA. Occupation vegetable peddler, 1910. Nov. 22, 1898, and had the following children: 1. James "Jim" CARLOUGH, b. Jan. 31, 1914, AK; m. Minnie YAKNAK; d. Aug. 1966. Minnie b. Jan. 19, 1922, AK; d. Sept. 1977, probably AK; bd. Port Graham Cemetery, Port Graham, Kenai Peninsula Borough, AK. This was possibly a second marriage for Minnie as stepdaughter Dorothy CARLOUGH (1936 - 2009) was living in James's household at the time of the 1940 census. 2. Patrick "Pat" CARLOUGH, b. 1918 - 1919, AK. 3. William CARLOUGH, b. 1920, AK. 4. Elsie CARLOUGH, b. ca. 1924, AK. 5. Louise CARLOUGH, b. ca. 1925, AK. 6. May 16, 1920, Seldovia, AK; crab fisher woman; d. Oct. 21, 2004, probably WA. Alyce lived in Seldovia, AK, 1920 - 1961; Dutch Harbor, Aleutians West, Alaska; and Snohomish, Snohomish Co., WA. This was probably Alyce's second marriage as her obituary mentions children surnamed MONSON. 7. Joseph S. CARLOUGH, Sr., b. 1933-1934; m. #1 Mae; m. #2 Barbara. Joseph, Mae, and Barbara were all listed as surviving family members when Joseph and Mae's son Joseph S. "Little John" CARLOUGH, Jr. was killed in an automobile accident, Aug. 17, 2000. James and his family were living in Seldovia, AK, in 1930. The 1930 census states that both of his parents were born in New Jersey. James died prior to Feb. 9, 1940, probably AK. His widow and children were living in what appears to be Porttaik Village (Port Graham ?), near Seldovia, at the time of the 1940 census. Jessie remarried to a man named BARNHART. She died in June of 1979 and is buried in the Seldovia City Cemetery, Seldovia, Kenai Peninsula, Alaska. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
