John Akin was born in Philedelphia. He later moved to the Chester District, S.C.. While living in South Carolina he had two known children, Samuel (born 1803) abd David. Around 1825 Samuel married Ellender Center (1807-January 29, 1883), daughter of Willliam Center. Bill Center was the commissioner of Education for the 4th District of Greenville County from 1822-1839. Ellender 's sister Annah married David Akin, Samuels' brother. Samuel and Ellender had eight children while living in South Carolina. Matt born 1826, Mira L (born 1829), Frances Angeline, Pernilia (born 1834), Eli Bayless (October 6, 1836-August 18, 1924), Robert Alexander(born 1839, Martha (born1841) and Sarah Ellen(1843). After moving to North Carolina between 1844 and 1846 they had two more children, Nancy(1847) and George Washington (died February 15, 1916). Samuel Akin was listed as a farmer on the census. He and Ellender moved to Tennessee for a while but moved back to North Carolina around 1876. They are both buried in Snow Hill Cemetary.,
