Two things come to mind. One, Atkins IS a deviation of Akins. Same for Eakins, Aiken, etc. Since the connection with the name difference goes back a few centuries, I haven't worried about the correlation. Thus, I have not included this name in my research. One day I might have to. While viewing Charlotte Co. Order Books (1789-1799) on microfilm, I have noticed a Peter and William Atkins. I kept this reference in my head as a reminder. NOT that they were related, but rather the person writing down the information could have made a mistake in spelling. Subsequent recordings by different pensmen of those records show the same Atkins. Thus, I believe they are of a different clan. The second thought is natural. Every researcher means well in their own work. Some are just better qualified than others. Thus, you take for granted one's work or check it out yourself. Family Tree Maker will not qualify the work of a researcher. Nor will they disqualify it either. FTM files should only be used for reference only and not for certification of proof of ancestery. Most ancestry groups require certification for entry. Each group has different criterea for entry. For instance, Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) tend to have less criteria than the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC). Still, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) tend to have even stricter rules for entry. Regardless, all have rules of ancestry. On the other hand, Family Tree Maker, a subsidiary of Broderbund, is a "for profit" business. They are in the business of selling information, not on checking for authenticity. Their small print says so. I understand that you can contact the author of the information found on FTM discs. If so, then contact that individual and ask that the error be corrected with a new upload to FTM. Still, FTM will not correct a previous version. That brings me back to the fact that second hand information should always be checked out first hand. I do the same with information given to me. If I don't agree or have questions, I let you know. And that you do know.
