Since we're piecing different Akers lines together, here are a few from the "Old South" (really old, like French Louisiana and Spanish Florida). Can anyone identify them? 1. THOMAS AKERS appeared in 1804 in what is now Livingston Parish, Louisiana, but was then part of Spanish West Florida. He married Martha Mitchell (supposedly from Belfast, Maine) in 1806 and had at least two children, William (b. 1808) and Lucinda (b. ca 1810-16). He died on 26 June 1815 at "age 45", which would put his birth date at about 1770, place unknown. 2. Another THOMAS AKERS and his brother? son? ASHAEL AKERS, acquired land in Lauderdale County, Mississippi Territory (now part of Alabama, near the Tennessee border) in 1818. Thomas appears on the 1820 census, and Ashael goes on to about 1850 or so. Ashael married Rhoda Platt. 3. SAMUEL ACRE registered several land claims with the U.S. government when it took over West Florida from the Spanish in 1810. The land was all in Mobile, present-day Alabama, where Samuel said he had resided since 1798. 4. JOHN AKERS and GEORGE AKERS appeared in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, where John married Catherine McKoy on 19 May 1818, and George married Mary Reed on 19 Jan 1828. An Internet correspondent claimed to have seen records where it was said that both John and George had come from "le Detroit du Canada". The source for this was a book called _Southwest Louisiana Records_ by someone named Father Hebert. 5. SARAH AKERS married Samuel Smallwood on 11 Nov 1818 in Carroll County, Mississippi. I don't know anything else about this Sarah. Can anyone shed light on these stray Akers, or attach them to any of the known lines in Virginia/Kentucky, New Jersey, or New England? -- Mark James <tmark@geocities.com>
