    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: davidakers78 Surnames: Akers Classification: biography Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.akers/461.485/mb.ashx Message Board Post: JUST A FEW MORE COMMENTS Slavery existed under british rule from about 1650 to 1776 (126 years). It existed under United States rule from 1776 to 1865 (89 years). Slaves were used for farming - major crops cotton and tobacco. How were these people treated? Did their owners value them as much as their horses and cattle? Did they really wear leg chains as they work in the fields? Were they well fed? Did they have any time of their own? What did they do during the off season (winter)? How did the owners treat a slave that could no longer work? What does the bible say regarding slaves and their masters? When slavery was abolished, some slaves had a measure of pride and accomplishment so they adopted the surname of their master. Now consider your case. Do you work for someone? How many days a year do you work? Are you really well compensated? How much freedom do you have? How will your employer treat you when you can no longer work? Obviously, our life spans are somewhat parallel. Dont get me wrong, I enjoy contemporary life and would not trade for all of the tea in China.
