I have a theory on another reason for the various spellings of Akers/Ackers... In some of the regions I'm searching (Ohio) there are several with the same first name (Wm., Jesse, Reuben) I suspect in addition to families having a falling out, they may have changed the spelling of the last name to distinguish themselves from all the other Wm and John Akers in their area. So hang in there, we all need each other to figure this line out!
