Born on January 12, 1925 at Rhodell, W.Va., he was the son of the late Henry Akers and Edna Bolen Akers. Mr. Akers was a retired coal miner, at Slab Fork, and Tams, W.Va., for most of his career. He was a member of the UMWA, and was a US Navy Veteran of World War II. He was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Akers had lived in Beckley for most of his adult life. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jacqueline Shutt Akers; by a brother, Howard Akers, and by a sister, Arvella Kosey. Surviving are his children; Alfred F. Akers and his wife Erna of Lewisburg, Alice Massing and her husband James of Sarasota, Fla.; five grandchildren, Timothy Massing, Thomas Massing, Hannah Massing, Madison Akers, Tyler F. Akers. Mr. Akers was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Graveside services and committal rites will be 2 p.m. on Sunday September 20, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley, with Rev. Orville Setliff officiating. Burial will follow at the cemetery following the service. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home in Beckley. Family members will serve as pallbearers.
