AKERS FLOYD "PAP" AKERS This article was originally printed in the Floyd County Times July 24, 1952 and reprinted August 29, 1979. The introduction is by Henry P. Scalf. Every effort has been made to replicate the printed article, including differences in punctuation and spelling.Some dates do not agree with other sources, so should be verified if they are to be used for any purpose. Floyd was known to his family as "Pap." I was born on Prater Creek, Dana, Floyd County, Kentucky, near the mouth of Wm. Akers Branch and was raised to manhood on Prater Creek, date of birth, April 15, 1869. I was the son of Levi and Nancy Hall Akers, the grandson of Elijah and Peggy Hall, on the maternal side. My paternal grandparents were Davy and Polly Marshall Akers. Elijah Hall was born in 1813. Davy Akers was born near the date of 1780. My father Levi, was born in 1823. My post office at the time of my birth was Laynesville, near where the present post office which is now called Harold, in an old log house. William Greer was postmaster when I was young. He was the son-in-law of Dr. S.M. Ferguson, who was a Captain in the Civil War. I well remember when my father died April 12, 1899. He was buried in the Rice cemetary, and I remember the text Elder John M. Akers used from the 14th chapter of Job, 14th verse. Elder Rube Tipton's text: "I can't see him now but will see him nigh." Both were old Regular Baptist Elders. Elder Rube Tipton was born June 13, 1839, Elder John M. Akers was born Oct. 11, 1855. My mother, Nancy Hall Akers, was born March 23, 1833, deceased Jan. 12, 1888. My father, Levi Akers, was born July 20, 1823. Both father and mother are sleeping in the Rice cemetery on Prater Creek, Dana, Kentucky, where my first wife and the following children are sleeping: Preston, Walker, Payten and two of my children of my first marriage are buried on Little Mud in the Kidd cemetery, to wit: Effa and Etta. To my first marriage were born seven children, three boys and four girls. I was married to Nana Justice, daughter of P.C. and Hannah Justice, Dec. 24, 1890. She united with the old Regular Baptist Church 1st Saturday in June 1896, and was baptised by Elder Bill Layne. She departed this life Feb. 5, 1905. I was married to Christina Jarrell, daughter of Parks and Jane Jarrell, Dec. 23, 1907, and to this union were born seven children, four boys and three girls. She joined the old Regular Baptist Church 1st Saturday in July, 1920, and departed this life April 22, 1946. Four of her children preceded her in death, and three survive. I was married to Mary E. Hunter, Oct.5, 1946. At present I have 63 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and I request that when I am gone, to be buried in the Rice cemetery on Prater Creek. My choice of ministers to preach my funeral are; first, Elder Willard Akers; second, Elder Tack Hall; third, Elder Banner Manns and fourth Elder Johnnie Hall. (Preston) born March 8, 1894, died June 14, 1928; Kenas Walker, born Dec. 28, 1895, died April 2, 1937; Levi Payton, born April 15, 1898, died Nov. 1, 1923; Mary Etta, born Feb. 27, 1900, died May 16, 1936; Minnie E. born April 10, 1902, living; Ada A. born Sept. 1, 1904, died Nov. 5, 1974. Children of the second marriage: Oka Akers, born Feb. 8, 1907 died May 10, 1907; Anna J. Akers born Feb. 14, 1908; living; Sheridan, born Feb 4, 1912, died Aug. 21 1912; Julia, born June 15, 1914, died Oct. 4, 1931; Bertha May, born June 19, 1916, living; Matt, born Dec. 6, 1918, died July 26, 1919; Jeffa L., born March 23, 1910, (died March 4, 1973). Effa E. professed a hope of Christ and joined the Christian Church and was baptised by Rev. T.F. Meade and lived a devoted life until death. John M. Preston joined the Old Regular Baptist Church 1st Saturday in May, 1925 and was baptised by Elder Elbert Hamilton into the fellowship of the New Salem Church, Harold, Kentucky. Kenis Walker joined the old Regular Baptist Church and was baptised into the fellowship of the New Salem Church, Harold, Kentucky, by Elder John M. Akers, assisted by Deacon A. J. Mary Etta professed a hope in Christ and joined the Freewill Baptist Church, was baptized and lived a devout life until death. Julia Akers professed a hope in Christ and joined the Regular Baptist Church, but was so weak she never was baptized. Obituary is on page 34, minutes of the New Salem Association, 98th session, 1923. Through all of my nearly 83 years of life I have had a faith rooted in the old-time faith of the Regular Baptist Church, beleving in everlasting saving grace of our Lord as taught in the Bible, and that throgh all kinds of trouble, sickness, death and sorrow, there can be no hope for mortal man except through faith in a crucified Reedeemer.
