Akers, 94, a former resident of the Vernonia community, late of Forest Grove, died Monday morning, June 18, 2007 at Alterra Wynwood Residential Community in Forest Grove. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, June 21, 2007 at 1:00 PM at the Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home, 741 Madison Avenue in Vernonia, with Reverend John Cahill, officiating. Concluding Rites and Interment will follow at the Vernonia Memorial Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to attend a reception immediately following the cemetery rites, to be held in the Fellowship Room at the Vernonia Baptist Church, 359 A Street in Vernonia. FLORENCE MAE AKERS was born May 13, 1913 in Yale, Idaho, the daughter of Joseph E. Tipton and Ella Florence (Offill) Tipton. She was raised and received her education in several communities, including Vernonia, Oregon, where she attended the Pleasant Hill School and Kelso, Washington. As a member of a pioneer family, Florence traveled with her family from Spokane, Washington to Weiser, Idaho by wagon train. She was united in marriage to Lee William Akers on August 31, 1935 in Pocatello, Idaho. Following their marriage they made their home in Pocatello and later Payette until 1947 when they moved to Oregon, settling in the Vernonia community. Florence was preceded in death by her husband, Lee, on June 23, 1979, after celebrating over forty-three years of marriage. Following her husband's death, Florence continued to make her home in Vernonia until July 17, 2004 when she moved to Forest Grove. Florence was a homemaker and mother to their three children. She attended the Vernonia Baptist Church and the Vernonia Community Church. Florence was a member of the Mt. Heart Rebekah Lodge #243, having served as Worthy Matron. Among her interests, Florence enjoyed helping others, having volunteered for many years at the Vernonia Senior Center. She had a strong faith in God. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, Steve Akers in 2005. Florence is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Clair Devine of Vernonia, Oregon and Joyce and David DeHart of Portland, Oregon; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Bonnie Akers of Coquille, Oregon; a sister, Melissa Baker of Weiser, Idaho; six grandchildren, Sandra Clanfield, Anthony Akers, Deborah Jubb, Susan Larimore, Rodney Devine, and Michael DeHart; seven great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. The family suggests that remembrances may be made to Alzheimer's Association, Columbia/Willamette Chapter, 1311 NW 21st Avenue, Portland, Oregon 97209, in her memory.
