William married Jane Galen and there are reported to be 15 children in the family. All of you who read my questions on this matter must be getting sick of me, but guess what, I am not giving up yet. 3. Two friends of mine who were both b. in Holland, tell me the name is spelled A-K-E-R-S there & pronounced AW-KERS. Interestingly enough my gg grandfather's wife's marriage permission slip spells it Awkers. I understand (not first hand) that Acres/Acers is the English spelling. I have no input on the other spellings. Thanx, Donna Hull

    3. Michelle, It is always a good idea to keep an eye out for different spellings. However, I searched the archived messages for the ACKER list and only found one ACRE and no ACREEs. There is a website that can search through old messages that were posted on rootsweb sites. The URL is http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl I also checked the ACREE list and it only had 6 messages total and the ACRE list had only 2. Hope this helps, Kerry Acker >Kerry, Would it be benificial to join the Acker list if I am looking for >Acre and Acree? >Michelle

    3. Hi Diana, My William is first found in Shawneetown, Gallatin Co. Illinoi 1809. His children are: William, Thomas, Susannah, George W. by first wife unknown. By second wife: John, Flavius Josephus & Andrew Jackson. I have been unable to locate the first William's birth place/date. Many of the names of Akers on this list are similar but have made no connection yet. Ever hopeful! Arlene Hetchler Arizona --- Gramidoll@aol.com wrote: > Arlene, > Who was your William married to? 1. Re: Akers List
    2. I have a theory on another reason for the various spellings of Akers/Ackers... In some of the regions I'm searching (Ohio) there are several with the same first name (Wm., Jesse, Reuben) I suspect in addition to families having a falling out, they may have changed the spelling of the last name to distinguish themselves from all the other Wm and John Akers in their area. So hang in there, we all need each other to figure this line out! 2. That's too bad that you don't have any AKERS in your line. Mine is full of them, and they are nice people! It was spelled interchangeably depending onwho was doing the writin' on the paperwork at the time. My great Grandfather couldn't read nor write and so he depended onothers to try to figure the spelling out. He marked everything with an "X". You might run into someoof your folks here after all. Who knows? I found some of my relatives spelled ACERS in documents in Colorado. If I hadn't known they were there buying thatone particular piece of property, I never would have looked twice at the spelling and just gone right over it. Good Luck! Diana AKERS Knowles

    3. Hi Pat, I went to the Montgomery County Courthouse in Christiansburg, Virginia last Christmas to research Akers, and not only pushed my line back three generations but also connected with a number of unknown relatives that have proven to be wonderful people. What I found was that beginning with my Great-great-grandfather most of them didn't write, so all of the documents were actually recorded by someone who may have been guessing how to spell the name. I think I found three different spellings for Akers in one marriage certificate: Acres, Ackers and Akers. So, after all this long-winded message, my view is that any spelling of a particular-sounding name is weighted equally, especially in our case Ackers, acres, etc. Conclusion: you should remain in this forum. :) -----Original Message----- From: PRobets@aol.com [mailto:PRobets@aol.com] Sent: Wednesday, October 20, 1999 11:54 AM To: AKERS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Akers List Are the A C K E R S posted to this list.
