Hi. I'm new to this list, and have seen a bit of discussion about a Thomas Akers who married in Barren County, Kentucky, in 1801. Does anyone know whether he remained in Kentucky and died there? I ask because I have a Thomas Akers who showed up in what is now Livingston Parish, Louisiana, in 1806 with a possibly bogus story about being from Ireland. He married there (at age 36) to Martha Mitchell, and had two children before his death in 1815. I've sometimes wondered whether Thomas was on the run from somewhere else (as a lot of settlers in that part of Louisiana were). Did the Kentucky Thomas have any reason to disappear, say, about 1805? -- Mark James <tmark@geocities.com>

Both "Our Kin", and the Shearer-Akers Gennys are incorrect as to his ancestry. Robert Akers of NJ married Sarah[4] Hart,: they removed to Loudon Co., VA briefly, before removing further to Bedford County, PA. I've been working on the Harts of western NJ, and was also under the impression that the Campbell County William was a son of Sarah[4] and Robert: until I learned differently. I believe (my memory may be faulty) that he was a son of a Robert Akers of the VA Tidewater area: I know of no relationship between the two Roberts. And; beware the two above-mentioned Gennys: they are rather riddled with mistakes--I have a copy of both. Be sure to "Verify, Verify, Verify" whatever material you use from either. Sincerely, Alice Smith

Heidi: I may have a connection. My g.g.grandfather, James A. Akers was born in VA Aug 15. 1835, married Sept. 15, 1866 in Sullivan Co., TN to Martha Ann Helen Owens. They lived in the Washington Co., VA area until 1885. They relocated to MO where both lived until their deaths. I do not know the names of James' parents. Carmen-- Can't give you any particulars, but your group was started by Uriah AKERS late 1700's or early 1800's. Uriah was son or grandson (I think he was the son) of Simon AKERS of Augusta Co. Simon was s/o Simon of NJ who was s/o William, the immigrant, of NJ. You might look at "Our Kin" by W. R. AKERS & several others that are on film. Heidi-- I think you are talking about William AKERS of Campbell Co. According to "Our Kin" by W. R. Akers, he is probably the son of Robert who was son or grandson of the immigrant William of NJ. There are other theories, but his book seems to agree with the records I have personally researched. There was also a William AKERS of Franklin Co. who was the son of Simon II (of Augusta Co., VA). Simon II, son/o Simon I who was son/o Wm the immigrant. The 2 Williams were 2nd cousins & approximately the same age. There are several AKERS books on film at Salt Lake City. Check out their catalogue at http://www.familysearch.org You can rent those films at your local Family History Center. None of these books agree with each other much. Donna

Akers marrys Rosannah Shin Salthouse in Illinois it is from this certificate that we learn that Benjamins parents are: Jesse Akers and Martha Razen and that Benjamin was born in NY. Here is one way this could work: George J., William, Benjamin L., Rachael (and possibly Levi and john) Akers. Are all Children of Jesse Akers and Martha Razen of New York. William , Benjamin and Rachael were all born in NY. Peter and Elizabeth Ann are children of Charles DeMoss and Sarah DeMoss Simmons (Sammons?) Rachael Akers marries William T. Herron (my relatives) Catharine is their Daughter. Catharine marries Peter (son of Charles DeMoss). Almon Akers (Rachaels Nephew (or younger brother), probably William's Son maybe by a first marraige or he might just be a younger brother) marries Peter's Sister, Elizabeth. William Akers may actually be married to another sister or Aunt Anna Simons (sammons) The DeMoss mother is Sarah Simmons or Sammons. The Akers, DeMoss, Herron and Sammons families are all intertwined. They seem to have met in and around Miami township, Hamilton Co. Ohio, and all moved to Adams Co. or Calhoun Co. IL. This update is based on my own research and bits and pieces from everyone I am sending this to. Two new important clues (at least to me) are the store listing with all the familes there, and the marriage of Catharine Akers/Herron to a DeMoss with a Sammons Mother-in-Law. Our latest breakthrough was finding Jesse Akers in New Jersey (thanks Wilma) and getting a ton of information on the New Jersey Akers families from Donna Evans. Some of the contibuters of information: Craig Herron craigh9557@aol.com Wilma Miller wmiller01@snet.net Ardie ardie@mcn.net donna Evans Dbe754@cs.com and many others.
My earliest AKERS family member is Thomas AKERS who married Martha "Patsy" BUSH about 1801. Their daughter Mary AKERS, married Thomas PARE in 1823. They were in Barren Co, KY by 1801. I lost quite a bit of information about a year and a half ago in a computer crash, but at that time I had hints that Thomas was the son of Abner AKERS, but no proof. I also was looking for Thomas and Patsy's children. If anyone is familiar with this family, I would love to correspond. I have kind of neglected researching this family and am starting with pretty skeletal data. Thanks! Hi, everyone. I have been away for a couple of years and just now getting back into genealogy and searching my BUSH & AKERS lines heavily. These have both been previously not well researched, so I am starting with skeletal information. I have just located both of these names (as well as FISHER that marries into this line) in the Germanna settlers list at http://www.germanna.org/settlers.html>. My AKERS line is not that far back - in fact, Thomas & Patsy married in 1801 in Barren Co, KY and that is all I know for sure. I *think* Patsy may be the daughter of Abner Akers, but that is speculation. Does anyone know if the AKERS in Barren Co., were out of VA? It is what I had suspected, as my other Barren Co, contacts (BARBOUR, PARE, and WILLIAMSON)are. Can anyone help? Thank you! Craig, Please include me in your response. My Akers line moved from Penn, to Ohio, to Indiana. I start with Frederick Akers and the dates look pretty close also. I have information to share if we find a link.
