    1. Re: mailing list — let's get something going...
    2. I would like to propose a research project for those on the list who are intertested. What I hope to do is to make a list of all referrences to Akers on a state by state basis with the names in cronological order. What good is this? All of us have been collecting various bits of info on all sorts of Akers's families some related to us some not, some who knows? My info is all over the place and not in any particular organization. It would be very helpful to be able to look at a state and see if any of the names matched. This could show us migration patterns, marriage patterns etc. How do we go about it? We start with one state. Everyone gather up what info they have on any Akers in that state and post it either to this site or to me. I will be in charge of gathering up the material for certain states that are of interest to me and I hope some of you will take charge of states of interest to them. Every so often we will post the list in progress (they will probably never be finished as we will be adding new info) What info do we want? The name of the Akers person/s Other names associated with this record (i.e. spouses, witnesses, neighbors etc.) The date of the record The location (state, county, town, address) keep it simple if you have an entire will just give us the names/dates/places involved and a note that the entire will can be viewed if desired. Will someone steal this information? Most if not all of what we deal with is already on the public record. We are mostly interested in Names, places and dates. I would hope not to get hung up on this as it really hurts research. What states shall we do? I have already started with New York state so that will be my first state. Other states I personally will do: New Jersey, Ohio, Illinois. I would hope to find volunteers to handle Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, and any other state of interest to this list. What years? To keep things manageable I would like to do from as early as possible to 1850-1875. Then at a later time from 1850-1875 on. What do you think? Craig Herron ggggrandson of Rachel Akers

    3. Hi I have a copy of a family letter that refers to AKERSHAUS. I posted the info on the Akers Forum on Genforum last June. You'll find that it is message # 681. Bob Collins ----- Original Message ----- From: <Gramidoll@aol.com> To: <AKERS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 09, 2000 7:21 PM Subject: Re: William Akers I, Rappahannock-Essex Co VA Now, mind you, this is second hand info.....My Uncle went to Olso, Norway 1 year ago and found that Oslo used to be called AKERSHAUS before it was called Oslo. Now somebody might be able to confirm or refute this. I haven't done any research in that area, except to find that there is a castle there that still bears the name AKERS and my Unlce was treated like royalty when they found he was an AKERS. They have a town center fountain and he says it is a real community and they know they are AKERS. (pronounced Awkers) They told him that many of the Vikings went to UK and into Europe trying to build an empire....long ago. Anybody else know anything? 1. Stray AKERS in the south
    2. T. Mark James
    3. Since we're piecing different Akers lines together, here are a few from the "Old South" (really old, like French Louisiana and Spanish Florida). Can anyone identify them? 1. THOMAS AKERS appeared in 1804 in what is now Livingston Parish, Louisiana, but was then part of Spanish West Florida. He married Martha Mitchell (supposedly from Belfast, Maine) in 1806 and had at least two children, William (b. 1808) and Lucinda (b. ca 1810-16). He died on 26 June 1815 at "age 45", which would put his birth date at about 1770, place unknown. 2. Another THOMAS AKERS and his brother? son? ASHAEL AKERS, acquired land in Lauderdale County, Mississippi Territory (now part of Alabama, near the Tennessee border) in 1818. Thomas appears on the 1820 census, and Ashael goes on to about 1850 or so. Ashael married Rhoda Platt. 3. SAMUEL ACRE registered several land claims with the U.S. government when it took over West Florida from the Spanish in 1810. The land was all in Mobile, present-day Alabama, where Samuel said he had resided since 1798. 4. JOHN AKERS and GEORGE AKERS appeared in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, where John married Catherine McKoy on 19 May 1818, and George married Mary Reed on 19 Jan 1828. An Internet correspondent claimed to have seen records where it was said that both John and George had come from "le Detroit du Canada". The source for this was a book called _Southwest Louisiana Records_ by someone named Father Hebert. 5. SARAH AKERS married Samuel Smallwood on 11 Nov 1818 in Carroll County, Mississippi. I don't know anything else about this Sarah. Can anyone shed light on these stray Akers, or attach them to any of the known lines in Virginia/Kentucky, New Jersey, or New England? -- Mark James <tmark@geocities.com>
