Donna and all, My granfather always told us we were "Holland-Dutch" and his father as well as his father's father was born in Pa. (George Franklin and Geo. Washington Akers) It was also said that they came from a Quaker Colony. Now, I haven't had much luck back beyond that. But, just to address the issue of AW-KERS...I think you have it right, at least where MY line is concerned. I have a suspicion that my Akers line goes back to the NJ Immigrant...proving it? Not even close! I join all the rest of the Ancestrially Challenged in the family! Diana Akers Knowles
Donna - I would love to see that as my AKERS seem to appear and disappear in the green grass of Kentucky. How are you able to look at the DAR archives in Washington D.C., do they have a website. I have a great grandfather on my mothers side who was in the American Revolution. I have a copy of the application my aunt used but it isn't notarized. I would like to try and get a copy of the notarized application. I have the reference number of the application. Cathy-I don't have it, but have seen it at a few libraries,e.g.,Fort Wayne. I would think that a family history library/LDS would be able to order it for you to view, if you're near one?
No I haven't, I have only a portion of it which is a photocopy with only the Browns on it. Do you have the Akers-Shearer genealogy? Hi-- Seeking information on Simon AKERS of Franklin Co., VA, m. in Greenbrier in 1780's to Mary SMITH. They moved c1797 to Clinton, later Highland Co., OH. They had a "large" family, some of which settled in KY. I need a list of children for him. He d. in Highland 1826 & he & Mary are buried there. His will only mentions Mary, and a Mr. Smith who is probably her relative. Census records have not been a good clue either. I have proven John b. 1795, William b. 1800 KY & Henry b. 1801 KY (or Franklin Co., VA) are brothers & they lived in Estill Co., KY 1820-30. John & Wm stayed in that area. Henry had to see the world & my line, as a result, came to CA. ANY information will be appreciated. Donna I too have found numerous errors or misconceptions in ALL of the AKERS published sources [except my own of course :-) ] The above Simon is called Simon III on the chart that was on the list today. So many sources confuse Wm of Franklin Co., VA with Wm of Campbell Co., VA. They even have them both m. to Elizabeth Martye, but some have Wm of Campbell m. to Polly Blackburn. Is Our Kin by W. R. Akers accurate as to the lineage of these 2 Williams??? And I'm curious about the other Tidewater Robert someone mentioned. More info please. Incidentally, several friends who are from Holland have told me this surname is quite common in Holland & is pronounced AW-Kers. That's the way it was spelled (Awkers) on Henry's m. license. Do you think Wm the immigrant to NJ was English or a transplanted Dutchman?? -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'm Ancestrally Challenged!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi All, I am wondering if Simon AKERS b. abt 1760 prob. in PA who married Sarah MALONE b. IN but married in KY was the sibling of Benjamin AKERS b. 1772 poss. KY who maried Catherine MALONE b. KY and married KY. I show Catherine MALONE's father to be Richard MALONE b. Ireland settled in PA. Most of Catherine's siblings were born in PA but the family did spend some time in KY and then returned to PA. I do not know Benjamin's siblings (his father was Thomas) but I do show that Catherine had a sister Sarah. Can someone help me with this. Thanks. W.L. Barker
Hi gang!! Regarding your conversations about a site with a data base, 30 years ago, I started a file that I call "KY Akers, Where did they come from & Where did they go?" I grouped different counties together in KY & have it separated in 7-8 groups. IF---like that to get started on your migration & data base, I can send it. Be aware that it does need to be checked. I did this hurridly to try & find my line. Found 2 brothers--still no father. I can share this, but others should correct it as necessary. Let me know if you wish me to send it. I can send part each day as it is too long to send all at once. We'll digest it better that way anyway. Thanx, Donna -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'm Ancestrally Challenged!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Alice, Looking over my notes, this is what I have. I have a Simon Akers, died in Hunterdon County, NJ in 1722 he married but do not have the name of his wife. They had the following children: Simon the second who married in Edgemont township, Chester County, PA in 1715 ROBERT, b. 1703 in NJ; married a woman named Sarah, (no last name) who was born March 13, 1706. John the first married a woman named Martha. Bought land in Amwell township, Hunterdon Co., NJ., in 1735. Children of John and Martha were: William the 2nd, Obadiah, Thomas, Susannah, Jonathan, Elsie. The Robert above married Sarah. Lived in NJ. They had the following children: William the third who was born in 1730 and died in 1810; married Elizabeth Martye (or Marte), from PA. So are you saying that the Robert above who married Sarah did not have a son named William who married Elizabeth Martye or I am getting my Williams mixed up. There are four in the line. Cathy~ Have you seen the Akers-Shearer genealogy? Maybe this is your cousin's source? This looks very familiar.~Joni
Dear Alice, Thank you very much for the information. I did not realize this. I don have Shearer-Akers lines. I will go back over this and make the corrections and I will verify and document everything I find and use it accurately. I am sorry about that, please forgive me.
