Meredith Thompson AKERS, Jr. and Gideon A. AKERS, sons of Meredith Thompson AKERS, Sr. of Marion Co AL, attempted to enlist in the First Alabama Cav., US, on 1 Dec 1863 at Camp Davies, MS. Both were rejected by the surgeon "on account of physical disability". Does anybody know the nature of these physical disabilities? Meredith, Jr. had previously served with two regiments of MS Cavalry (CS) and went on to become a prominent politician in Marion Co AL. Earl B. Does anyone have information about the AKERS families in Shelbyville, IL? My great-grandmother, Drusilla Akers Curry, died there in 1924 but I haven't been able to connect her to any Akers there. I believe she had a brother named William as there was a William Akers living with Drusilla and her husband, Robert Curry, in the Coles Co. 1860 census. Drusilla was 23 yrs. old at the time and Wm. was 20. Drusilla's death certificate states that she was born in OH and her parents were Samuel Aker and Catherine Ward, both born in IN. I've been unable to find any info. for either of them. Would sure appreciate any help at all. Nancy Young in MN

I am looking for information for a man named George AKERS. His wife's name was Dora. They were living in South Dakota when they purchased 40 acres of land in Webster Co MO 29 Dec 1931. They sold this same land 20 Feb 1933 and no further record has been found in Webster Co MO. Where did they move after selling their land? Earl, I think that Adam might be the father or grandfather of my Adam born 1828 in VA. Pls keep me in mind if you get an answer on the book. I would like know about him also. Thanks, Robin
Robin, the Adam Akers I'm talking about was the son of Blackburn Akers, Sr. and his second wife, Susannah Skaggs. A couple of folks wrote a book about his descendants that was published within the last year or so but I've never been able to find a copy. Earl B. Does anybody have the ancestry of Gabriel WOOD, b. abt 1834 in Floyd Co VA, who married Louella AKERS, b. abt 1835 in Patrick Co VA? Louella was the daughter of Fleming AKERS (son of John & Mary Anne Jeffries AKERS) and Nancy AKERS (daughter of Samuel and Sarah Highly AKERS.) One source says Gabriel descended from James WOOD, Governor of Virginia 1796-1799, who was Superintendent of Prisoners and a Brigadier General during the American revolution as well as a Presidential elector but I can't find anything that would confirm his lineage. Thank you, Earl B. Akers, Sr. Puyallup WA The Banyan Tree

Permelia Howard Akers was born in Montgomery Co VA about 1800 and died in Floyd Co VA before 20 Nov 1856. On 12 Apr 1818 she had an illegitimate son, Lindsey Akers, and on 10 Apr 1836 she married "Lame" or "Crippled" John Weddle in Montgomery Co VA. My understanding is that the custom of the time was for an illegitimate child to take the surname of the mother, therefore Permelia is almost certainly an Akers, and the Howard is for her mother's family. Proceeding with this assumption, then her parents must be either (a) Jonathan Akers and Hannah Howard, who married in Montgomery Co VA on 25 Mar 1795, (b) Jacob Akers and Ruth Howard, married 21 Dec 1796 in Montgomery Co VA, or (c) Blackburn Akers, Jr. and Elinor Howard, who married in Montgomery Co VA on 17 Apr 1797. On the 1810 census of Montgomery Co VA Jonathan and Hannah have two females 0-10 and two 10-16. The 10-16 are Matilda and probably Clarissa, leaving two 0-10 unnamed. On the same census Jacob and Ruth have three females in the 0-10 age group. One is probably Elizabeth, leaving two unnamed. Also on the same census, Blackburn, Jr. and Elinor have one female in the 0-10 group and one in the 10-16. The 10-16 would be Esther, leaving the 0-10 female unnamed. One of these five unnamed females in the 0-10 group on the 1810 census must certainly be Permelia Howard Akers. I've about run out of information and places to look for more. Anything that might help narrow my search would be greatly appreciated! Kind regards, Earl B. Akers, Sr. Puyallup WA The Banyan Tree
