Hi Liz: Ideally, I would expect to match "Thomas P. Ailes" of the 12th Louisiana Infantry with a "Thomas P. Ailes" who was a resident of Morehouse Parish in the Federal Census of 1860. Thomas of the 12th enrolled in February 1863 at Bastrop when Captain Stevens was home on furlough after nearly a year's service. We can't be absolutely sure that Thomas was a resident Morehouse Parish in 1860, but if not, then an explanation of his presence in Bastrop in early 1863 is needed. The Confederate Conscription Act of April 1862 required enrolled Confederate service of all white male residents ages 18 to 35 years for three years or the duration of the war. Those who did not voluntarily comply within six weeks or so were rounded up as conscripts unless they were successful at hiding out. In September 1862, the upper age limit was expanded to 45 years. Since TPA did not enroll until February 1863, an initial presumption can be made that he had just turned 18 years of age. Otherwise, he was not in compliance with the law. But Thomas P. Ailes of the 12th Louisiana was an educated man and it is entirely possible that he was in his 30's instead of just turning 18. But some rationale will be needed to explain his late enrollment. The Confederate Conscription Act was supported by additional acts that provided for exemption from service for certain occupations. Teaching was one of them. Are there any family stories of TPA going to Bastrop to teach? Was there an academy of some sort established at Bastrop that was in operation in 1862? He survived the war. I have presumed that he returned home to Bastrop from North Carolina. However, did he have extended family in any of the states east of the Mississippi River that might have tempted him to go there instead of returning to Louisiana? I look forward to hearing back from you! Hugh ********************************************* -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This thread:
I posted that James S.W. was a Texas Ranger in Goliad in 1860. I meant to say 1850. In case some one wants to pull up that census and check names of the other rangers he was living with.... it is interesting. Dear Marlene, I have been thinking about you racking your brain trying to figure out who the three unidentified children on Walker and Martha's 1840 census were. I thought that maybe they belonged to John Ferby, and here is why. John F. Ailes married Mahala Andrews Aug.1,1825 in Ouachita Par. LA. She apparently died sometime before the 1830 La census was done. It appears that she died shortly after the birth of her last child.( a little girl) He later marries Elizabeth H. Smith I cannot recall the date. I believe they have some more children. Rhonda posted info on John Ferby a while back. I will look it up and resend it to the list. ..... I need to refresh my memory. I found John Ferby in Texas fighting in the Texas Revolution. What a guy........ He could have been there anytime between 1835-1842. He died ca 1838. I had wondered if he died in TX but I double checked and he applied for a pension. So you see........ I was wishing that he left his three sweet little children in the care of Martha and Walker while he went gallievanting off to Texas seeking adventure........BUT NOOOOOO. That would have been easy... It would have made a good story. So sadly I am back to square one. In 1830 John's house hold as follows.... 1 male 30-40- likely John F . 1 male 20-30-? still looking into that one 1 male under 5- James S.W.- dob- ca 1827. ( Texas Ranger in Goliad as per1860 census under the command of Capt. James Bagby- I have not been able to track him after that. I did find a James Ailes in the New Orleans Marriage index marrying Lucinda Cook on May 1,1882. I don't know if this is our James S.W. He would have been about 55 by then. 1 male 5-10 - Thomas P. -dob- ca 1825 - married Mary Moore- They had 2 daughters Mahala and Mary. I have a little more info on Mary Moores family and daughter Mary Ailes Flynn/Flinn . I will post what I have in case someone wants the info. I have not been able to track down daughter Mahala. So if any of you know what happeed to her please clue me in.... I also have additional info on Thomas P. to post. . 1 female under 5 ? - Levenia Ailes may be a possibility. She married Dr. Issac I. Newton in Ashley Co AR Nov.8,1854 I also found a James, Joseph and Nathaniel Addison on The Texas Rev.site. Nathaniel was from La. I wish I could find out if the other two were also from LA. Rhoda Caroline Wall Ailes married a James Addison after her second husband Obadiah Tate died. I found them in Tangiapohoa Par. LA. Rhoda C. Wall's first husband was William D.Ailes. His parents were Walker and Martha McClendon Ailes. I am still looking for William and Rhoda's daughter Also Named Rhoda. Liz
Hearing and seeing our daughters and granddaughters all playing the violin together brought tears to our eyes. I well remember when I was the taxi driver to lessons, rehersals, performances, etc. I was so glad when my oldest daughter got her driver's license! But, I have been well rewarded for all the time I spent driving and waiting around, etc. I thought maybe "crow's feet" might have been an herb, or wild flower, or something I might call a weed. It will be interesting to hear what Dr. Rodriguez says. Hey there, I am catching up on yesterdays mail. I was in and out all day. When I finished with the mom's taxi thing my boys expected to be fed and paid attention to. You all know how that goes. I bet it was so special to hear your daughters and granddaughters playing their violins. My daughter wanted to play a viola in Jr. high school. She decided it wasn't for her. Dear Jinny, What a treasure indeed. I know it has to means a lot to you. What year was your grandmother born? Did you inherit any musical talent from them? One of my favorite treasures happens to be my great grandmother's (Mary Blanche Ailes Johnson's) cornbread pan.(cast iron skillet) Shortly before my grandmother Rubye died she gave it to my dad to give to me. I cherish it and use it all of the time. Unfortunately I don't have a musical bone in my body but I do like cornbread....... I love old classware and crocks. Walter calls them my dust catchers. Grandma Rubye gave me her old Fiesta Ware after my first child was born. I don't use it very often. I don't want to break any..... So I and look at it and think of her. I'm also a fool for old photos. I have accumalated quite a collection over the years. I have one of a little girl ca 1870-1880 sitting with her baby sister. The little girl is clutching a little kitten by the neck and the baby is playing with her her litle toes. It is so cute. They are both wearing little white dresses. I have another ca1880-1890 of a family standing in front of a well with a pump....... . No house in site but they look so proud of their pump. I don't have a clue as to who these people are. These are probably my favorites in my collection. Thanks, Liz. I have some other Aills that I can't seem to place either. I will get those names out tomorrow. Sandra, I'm somewhat confused. Are you looking at the possibility of James Wesley not being William's son and a brother to the Aills in EFP, LA? Marlene
Liz and Jinny, I enjoyed the postings about your heirlooms you treasure, although I truly believe your complete lists would be much more extensive! Of course, my husband and I have a few of our own, including violins!! Both our daughters play the violin and have taught violin.....been members of various symphonies, etc. Both have played violins that have come down through the family. One of my best, more recent memories is of seeing and hearing my daughters and granddaughters all playing violin together and some of the violins they were using had been in the family for many, many years. My husband's immigrant Smith ancestor was Dr. Samuel Smith. I don't know his date of birth, but he died in 1807, within two miles of where we lived in 1959 when our first child was born. He immigrated from Northern Ireland, maybe just after the Rev. War. He was a Scots-Irish Presbyterian. He was educated at Edinburgh, Scotland (I have a record of his attendance at that University I acquired in 1974). Sometimes writing on an old piece of paper also falls into the category of an heirloom, or at least in does in our family. In an old journal kept by his grandson (my hubby's g grandfather), was written the following (about 1860): "This is said to be old Grandfather Smith's remedy and proved effectual." Cancer 1 part arsenic 2 sulphur 3 yolk of egg 4 crow foot - I suppose extras 5 maiden hair do do Liz.....I would be hugely interested in what your Doctor friends might say about this remedy....if it isn't too much of an imposition and he has the time. Tarney
Dear Marlene, I have been trying to figure out who these extra children were. Did they belong to Walker and Martha and died very young or were they relatives staying with them? I have been looking over dates for some of the Ailes close by that still are a mystery. Hit a dead end. Will keep looking. I was reading them again today. The tool inventory was so cool. My husband and I collect old hand tools. Wwe have his great grandfathers old homemade tool chest and woodworking tools. I have some that belonged to my greatgrandfather. We also have picked some up through the years at tool shows and flea markets. We use some of them. Hi Liz, I,too like old tools and heirlooms. You mentoined having something from your great grandmother, does that mean you are older than I am, lol. Me thinks you have a ways to go yet for that. I have a desk my dad, built and he was born 1890, I, also have a small night table that he built, And I have a dream of my life which I never ever even contemplated ever owning this treasure, I finally wound up with my Dad's violin. I was shocked. It got broken pretty badly somewhere along the way. I had it repaired and had an air tight case made for it. I am so proud of it. To top it off my sister and I put our heads together and figured out the fiddle was the one that my Dad's mother used to play. Isn't that a treasure or what? I had alot of glassware and took most of it back to Kansas and gave it to my nieces. Enough of this chatter. Hang in there, love you all. Jinny So sorry about the typos.... I didn't have spell check on. I don't know if my brain can't keep up with my fingers or my fingers can't keep up with my brain...... You're welcome. I just wish the file would have named the heirs. It seems like a lot of these old probate files are incomplete. Many of them never mention heirs. It's always great to find one that does.
