November 6, 1847 Arkansas Intellegencer Van Buren, Crawford County, AR A BARBECUE AT NATURAL DAM Agreeable to previous notice given, the citizens of Lee's Creek Township met at Natural Dam, on Saturday, the 23rd of October, 1847, for the purpose of giving a barbecue and Dinner to our friend and fellow-citizen, A.S. Marshall, one of the Encarncion prisoners who has lately returned from Mexico. In consideration of the very high respect which we entertain for Mr. Marshall as a citizen, and also the full confidence which we have in his fidelity, firmness and patriotism, the following proceedings were had: On motion of Robert Harris, Esq., John Shannon, Esq. , was called to the Chair, andn Andrew Morton, appointed Secretary. The object of the meeting being then explained by the Chairman in a brief and appropriate manner. On motion of William G. Shannon, Esq., a committee of seven were appointed to make the necessary arrangements for the occasion; the Chairman then appointed the following gentlemen to compose the committee; James Black, Henry Hartgraves, Capt. Soloman Forrester, Maj. James S. Darr, John Payne, Jefferson Shannon, Esq. , and Ammon Payne. On motion of Maj. Darr-William G. Shannon, Esq., was appointed Marshal of the day and Robert Harris, Esq., William Dow, and Joseph Bryant, Esq., assistant Marshals. On the motion of Henry Hartgraves, the committeeof arrangements appointed Messrs. J. Black, Jefferson Shannon and A. Payne (of their number), to await upon the Ladies, who were assembled on the occasion, and invite them to the dinner table; when an Oration suitable to the occasion was delivered by Parker F Stone, Esq. After which the Ladies and Gentlemen, present, partook of the dinner, which had been previously prepared-passing the balance of the day in hilarity, and much good feeling prevailed among all present.
