It appears my great grandmother Kathrine Ann Nelson may have been called Cassie. My grandmother Birdie Mae Goin Sorrels listed her parents as John James Goin and Kathrine Ann Nelson on her application for SS number. Grandma Birdie was born in 1886 in DesArc (Prairie County) Arkansas. I have found on a census in Prairie County, a listing for Cassie Nelson married to J J Goin in February 1896, which is the month and year of my grandmas birth. This census also lists "E.J. " as Cassie Nelsons mother. Cassie apparently married again to W.B.Marwill in 1891. There was never mention by my grandmother of what happened to her mother. Only that her Father died, left her an orphan, and she was raised by her Uncle until her marriage at 13. My grandmother Birdie Goin was raised by her uncle Bob Nelson, whom I have found as Robert Nelson on a Prairie County census as born in 1874, married to Lucy, also born in 1874. They are both listed as being black. My grandma told the story of being part Indian. If anyone has any connection to the above people, I would be very interested and can share some documents and photos.
