    3. Why face east? Modern cemeteries may be more likely to have graves facing in multidirections but in most frontier cemeteries and 19th century burials the head of the grave will be toward the west and the foot, toward the east. For the most part, the settlers of the South were Protestant and as such, believed that at the Second Coming of Christ that they would rise to face Him as He arrived from the east. This is a very valid question to ask and the cause is a marker for the culture, if not proof of the religious belief of the individual.
