Hi, I am looking for more information on Mathew Sommerville. He is listed as being buried in National Cemetery, Jefferson Barracks, MO, and that he died 14 December 1864 in a federal prison, but instead of a unit # and rank, he is listed as a "Citizen of Lawrence County AR" Can anyone tell me how to find more information on his imprisonment and death? If he were a soldier there would be a military file, but could there be one of a citizen because he was held in a union prison? Also, has anyone researched this area before that could answer, why would a civilian have been taken prisoner. Could it be simply that he was a confederate citizen, or would he have had to commit a "crime" in order to be taken prisoner? I would appreciate if anyone could recommend readings on the subject of Arkansas in the Civil War. Thanks for your time and help!
