Ransom Gaither, murdered by another negro named Henry Wilburn ... with perhaps ... other accomplices September 28, 1873 - BURTON - LITTLEJOHN - DeFROE - JOHNSTON -- Lee BURTON - Sunday last, 21st inst. three colored men, Ed and Jesse Littlejohn and James DeFroe ... vicinity of the "Big Ditch" found the body of a colored man. Suspicions fixed on Alex. Johnston, a colored man... June 26, 1875 - Henry MURDOCK, a negro boy was drowned in Terre Noir Creek on Sunday before last while bathing. February 24, 1877 - Baldwin CHEATHAM - The Southwest Press of Washington, Hempstead County, says that Baldwin Cheatham, a negro, aged 119 years died in that county last week. And yet there is nothing said of his having been a body servant to General Washington. July 21, 1877 - Batt AUSTIN - On last Monday, a homicide was committed on the body of Batt Austin, a negro man, about 10 or 12 miles from this place by Mr. Ed Johnson. There were no other parties present at the time, and the circumstances as related by Mr. Johnson and as corroborated by the position of the body after the homicide show him to have been Justified. October 5, 1878 - Jas. WASHINGTON the negro who was found near the railroad week before last, died last Monday. During his illness he was kindly cared for by the city authorities and received constant attention at the hnds of some of our physicians. He was buried last Tuesday. January 25, 1879 - SLOAN - John Ashley, two year old son of D. and Sue Sloan, colored, living in a neat little cottage near the east of our courthouse, fell across a flat iron, setting before the fire, while it was very hot and burned his groin in a terrible manner, leaving some flesh adhering to the iron when rescued by his mother. The child lived till Thursday morning last in great agony, when death relieved him of his suffering. May 31, 1879 - Charity CLAY - Early Thursday morning last, a colored woman, living in our city, arose and complained of having a slight headache but cooked breakfast for her family as usual, but a few moments afterwards fell dead on the floor. Heart disease is supposed to have been the cause. The day before she had worked all day in the field near town, and was a very industrious woman. 1881 - TARVER - FEARS - John TARVER (col.) well known in this city, died last Tuesday at the residence of his brother in law, Henry FEARS, near Rose Hill cemetery. He has been in bad health for some time with consumption and finally fell a victim to this dreadful disease. May 5, 1906 - HILL - CROW - A Negro, George Hill, living on the Crow place, shot and killed his wife on last Saturday morning, and skipped out immediately and our city sluthes have not yet been able to apprehend him. May 24, 1906 - POST - The whole of the McPheaarson Hotel force was cast into grief on Sunday afternoon by the drowining of Charlie Post, Mrs. McPherson's (sic) assistant cook. Charlie had been working at the hotel for five years, and being a good colored boy and a good servand had made himself a general favorite. He was swimming with a number of other boys and took the cramps. One def (sic) boy was within three feet when Charlie went down but knew nothing of it. October 4, 1908 - PEAKE ... while Ed Peake was a Negro, he was an honorable man and stood for the highest in this community where he lived so long. December 1, 1910 - Uncle Dick SINQUEFIELD, died at Dalark last week, and in his death the colored race lost one of its ablest, best known and most useful members, and the state a good citizen. "Uncle Dick" as he was familiarly known, was raised at Holly Springs, Dallas County, and for ovr 50 years he had been preaching the gospel and in a varied line of activities to elevate his race.
