Really, you are very luck to find out this much on an Arkansas Confederate soldier. Usually there is little in the way of biographical data in these records. What I would do is locate this man on the 1860 U. S. Census. This will tell us where he lived, and may even tell about his family. Did you check to see if his widow received a Confederate pension record? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Russell P. MATTHEWS/MATHEWS. I have his records from the national archives stating that he that he was a private in Company F, 45th Arkansas Cavalry; but these records do not state when and where he enlisted. They say that this is all the records they have. I am sure that he was from Lawrence County, Arkansas. But how can I find an enlistment date? He was my great grandmother's brother. He died in an Illinois prison camp on Christmas Eve 1864. As far as I can tell, he never married or had any children. I sure will appreciate any help.
