Some few days ago there was a discussion relative to mines in Arkansas. As I am unsure which list hosted the discussion, am posting to both - please excuse duplication. In the April 4,2000 issue of the Arkansas-Democrat-Gazette is a picture of a postcard showing the inside view of the Dixie Fuel Co. mine near Paris, Arkansas. The caption reads "Paris, 1940 For much of the first half of the century the Arkansas River Valley produced substantial amounts of coal. Mining was among the most dangerous occupations, but one chosen by this unidentified gentlemen inside the Dixie Fuel Co., Logan County mine." Hope this helps someone. P. J. Cowling
Persons interested in a recently published volume of Masonic death records may check the following URL for more information. Records from older lodges may be found with the Grand Lodge but many of the records will be located in the local lodges. Sometimes the records of defunct lodges may be found in private ownership. And sad but true, it is sometimes possible to find Masonic records in flea markets. Masonic Death Records from the Grand Lodge of Arkansas, 1941-1990 Compiled by Desmond Walls Allen ISBN 1-56546-153-3, 315 pages, softbound, $39.00 http://www.arkansasresearch.com/desmason.html Debra Blackard
The Arkansas Genealogical Society has published a book compiled by Arlene LaGrone titled Masonic Deaths in Arkansas 1838-1916, 183 pages. This book is available for purchase from AGS, PO Box 908, Hot Springs, AR 71902-0908 for $25.00 which includes postage and handling.
Can someone tell me what happened to Union Co. AR. I was looking for a Pendleton family land homestead and a listing on Roots came up with a bunch of Pendletons in Union Co. Where did it disappear to. Thanks, Ellen Tolleson Reesh
Dear list, and Joyce, The Masons are not into genealogy, and this is a shame. The only way you will receive anything will be if a member takes it upon himself to look it up.( so it would help if you knew one of the members) Which may be a very large task, for several reasons. An example the lodge that your ancestor was a member may have merged with another lodge. The small lodges don't have any type of record vault, so any record may have deteriorated by now. If the record could be found It would only contain a small amount of information about your ancestor. Please don't be discouraged. Any information about ones ancestor is priceless! As far as I know, There isn't any masonic laws or rules to prevent them from sharing information about the dead members. I do know it would help to prove your relationship to the ancestor that your researching as well as much information you have on them, When you submit your request. WHAT can we as genealogist do? Well I can tell you the Grand Lodge isn't going to do anything unless the demand is great. In other words if every genealogist in Arkansas was to write to the Grand Lodge and let them know there is a interest in the Genealogical Information of their deceased members, then and only then would they consider it. They have a web site so they have the place for it. By the way the same applies for all the masonic orders. Now about the book, Well I've heard of it, but never have read it. You may ask your local library for an inter library loan this is a free service the libraries offer. Hope this helps, Dennis "Hutton (by way of Jan Davenport )" wrote: > I wrote a couple of months ago to the Masonic Lodge in Brinkley, > Arkansas, for whatever they could send me on my father. For those who know the Villines family from Newton County Arkansas, Nellie Villines, wife of Ruben Villines, passed away at 1:30 a.m. April 11. Ruben and his family grew up in the Newton County area. There are many of his family already buried in the many cemetaries of the area. They had lived in Springfield Missouri area since leaving home after the war. Anyone wanting more info can contact me, Lila Villines Jourdan, frontierengineer@netscape.net. She will be greatly missed by all. ____________________________________________________________________ Get your own FREE, personal Netscape WebMail account today at http://webmail.netscape.com.
I wrote a couple of months ago to the Masonic Lodge in Brinkley, Arkansas, for whatever they could send me on my father. Well, I am still waiting - so I don't know if they are permitted to share records with family members. I even included the SASE. Seems strange however since there is a publication (see below) that my father is listed in. If anyone should have this book, I would be very grateful if you would look up Alvin Oswald LAWSON (died 11/18/1958) for me and send me the results. Perhaps in a few years it might reach us here in the Seattle, Washington, libraries. AGS List, there was a question recentely on the list about the Eastern Star of Ar. Is there any infomation available that can be obtained from the Masonic Orders? My ggrandfather joined the Masonic Lodge in 1863 in Murfreesboro Ar. I have read that the state storage area had suffered some fires, are records kept for long periods in these small towns, or is these anything there that would be of value to a genealogy search. I appreciate your replys, and many thanks to a most helpful AGS List Mecilla Keene

The Eastern Star chapter would be connected with the local Masonic Lodge in whatever town that they lived in. The Masonic Grand Lodge in Arkansas maintains a web site. There is limited information for former lodge members in the 1800 due to a fire. You might use you search engine to get the address for the Arkansas Grand Lodge F&AM
