Hi List, Goodspeed Bios are for different parts of Arkansas. My great grandfather is listed and he was from White County. I have also seen a northern Arkansas Goodspeed in Fulton Co. Ar. I do not feel they were just for Arkansas, I have seen Goodspeed refered to in Tenn. I have researched in several counies in Georgia but have not seen Goodspeed mentioned there. Ellen Parker
AF & AM stands for Acient Fee and Accepted Masons. The reference to JD stands for Junior Deacon
Hello Everyone Can any one tell me where I can get a copy og Goodspeeds Thanks Teri
In a message dated 04/15/2000 9:31:33 AM Central Daylight Time, 4roberts@cei.net writes: << I was wondering what is Goodspeed? Where would I find it? >> Goodspeed is; "Goodspeed Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Southern Arkansas". Published, 1890, new material added in 1978. The earlier edition was one large volume with an index of names in an accompaning thin booklet. The later printings have added some new material and is in a set of several volumes, about six volumes in number, with indices of names in the back of the volumes. The text book is in most Arkansas libraries and I would assume all large libraries which have material on Arkansas families would have it. I have found the material to be accurate but may tend to omit some things which should have been put into it. For instance, Goodspeed lists twin girls in the family of Virgil and Sallie Wood, in addition to 6 other children. The twins' names were, Okla and Homa! The Wood family disappeared from all Hempstead County, AR., records after the 1880 census; the twins were not in that census or any Arkansas census . After wondering why they would name their twins, Okla and Homa and living in Arkansas, I finally found the family in Kay County Oklahoma! Okla and Homa were born AFTER the family moved to Oklahoma. Goodspeed should have entered that little fact and saved me 4 years of searching for the why of the names and where the family had moved. Virgil A Wood was a physician in southern Arkansas and after searching for four years where Virgil and his family had disappeared, a friend suggested I search medical records. The Journal of the American Medical Association at the library of the UAMS in Little Rock, says he was practicing medicine in Blackwell OK in 1885. So don't expect many details to be found in Goodspeeds text book that should have been there. However, it is a good reference book concerning families which lived in Southern Arkansas. If genealogy was an easy and "cut and dried" hobby, I suppose it would not hold any attraction for us. Ray, in Southern Arkansas
I was wondering what is Goodspeed? Where would I find it?
Caghayes - maybe there is a delayed birth certificate for your relative? My grandmother was born in 1909 and I have a deferred certificate for her that was applied for in the county where she was living that listed her birth county. The deferred certificates are witnessed by a family member that can confirm the birth and parentage - in this case it was her sister, my grand-aunt.......
With regard to Goodspeed's Biographies, I concur that they are a good starting point and I have had success with finding a family name that allowed me to head in another direction. In one instance, mention was made that Mr. McCall raised horses and that has encouraged me to keep searching for connection with my grandfather who raised horses. I have been led to understand that one of the drawbacks is that some names may have been omitted, i.e. non-living siblings, FEMALES, very young children, etc. The descriptions of the individuals are often quite flowery but that's okay. We can sort through that. What is important is just to keep in mind that documentation is very important as it is in any reports that we come across. I, too, am new to genealogy and I have just begun to use lists. My experience has been very positive. Everybody is so helpful and considerate. I want to thank everyone who has responded to my queries and I certainly hope that I can return the favor. Mecilla: I received info from Goodspeeds conerning my GGgranfather and several of his children, which confirmed many of the "tidbits" I had gathered on the family and added confirmation <and a few new details>. I think it is safe to say that the info found in Goodspeeds is accurate.........
>Could someone please check for John Wells in the 1850 census of Fulton/Lawrence Co AR? He would be 18 yr and under guardianship of one George Wells. I think we may have discussed this before. Maybe someone will respond with the actual contents, but it is likely to be the same. The listing is in Benton, Fulton Co., AR page 150, Dwelling 11, 03 Oct 1850. The listing actually shows the head of household as G. Wells 25 b: AR, Farmer with property value of $200. John is shown as a student and property value of $200. From this I would conclude that G. (George?) was most likely his brother and the property was probably some left to them by their parents. Given the split I would think there might be either a land record on this or and estate or probate record. I would bet there is no Will given the age of the children. On the same page in Dwelling #3 is the following: E. C. Hunter 50 b: VT Farmer with property valued at $150 Gilbert Wells 26 b: AR Farmer with no property value. It may be Gilbert was a brother to G(eorge) and John. The census was taken the same date by the same census taker so it is unlikely Gilbert and "G." are the same person. Orin R. It has been my experience that much of the information that I have found is accurate but some is not. The information should be viewed as a good starting point or things to consider and check out. You should confirm any and all information found there if possible. In your notes you should also list the Goodspeed as the source of the information. There is a lot of good information to be had in the Goodspeed histories but as with any other family histories, county histories, etc., prove the information if at all possible. Could someone please check for John Wells in the 1850 census of Fulton/Lawrence Co AR? He would be 18 yr and under guardianship of one George Wells. Thanks so much. My grandfather John b.1832 Fulton Co., ARand orphaned about 1840. Don't know what happened to his parents. Help anyone, and thanks! Lorrie Wells
Mr. Baker: does this hold true for African Americans? I have hit a stone wall when trying to find birth, death and marriage certificates in ARK of my g.father Eugene Cullon Wynn, b. Monroe County in 1906.. Since he was born before 1914 and no b.certificate exists, would I find him in any census list after 1906? He moved to Humnoke at some point. According to his social security application, he applied for his SS# at age 30 in Humnoke, then I believe he moved to California. He married Florida Hodges, date unk. In 1936, they had a daughter, Dorothy in Humnoke. I'd like to find the marriage certificate AND proof of birth for him. I'm stuck! Any ideas on where to go from here??
Looking for someone who has a copy of the Thompsons in CSA AR Pension Applications and a big heart. Sure appreciate a list of those Thompsons. Don Thompson

Just a comment on this. I am a Master Mason. I have a friend who while looking at an old photo of his dad who had died and for reasons unknown to him he was adopted out. Not knowing how to get a lead on his dad, He noticed his father was wearing a Fez in the old photo. That Indicated he was a Shriner therefore a Mason also, from that lodge in some state he was able to build a family branch until then not available. Good work dont you think? Les
