I just wanted to give a big "thank you" to everyone who answered my two requests. I now know that there is a Mortality Schedule that I can check and try to find when and where two of my ancestors died. Also, I now know what the Masonic EA, FC, and MM stand for. All of you are truly a very helpful and wonderful group. Joyce
Dear Debra, Thanks very much for telling me that land patents are different from land entries. I've gotten land entry files for Arkansas from NARA by using the index compiled by Desmond Walls Allen and Bobbie Jones McLane. They were very helpful. Does anyone know if there is such an index available for Alabama? Thanks, Jan

Does anyone have any information on a John Stewart/Stuart who was a sergeant in Clinch's Company (pre-1820; War of 1812?) 7th regiment? He was granted 160 acres in Arkansas in 1820. Is there anyone who has any information on the John Stewart who had several land grants in Ashley Co, AR. Was there a plantation? According to my aunt, my grandfather, William Allen Stewart, talked about there being two houses; one new and the other used for storage; the family cemetery being between the two. I am trying to find the parents and siblings (if any) of Alexander Stewart; born abt 1837; Alexander's wife was Amanda Williams; bn 1823 in TN. She is on the 1850 census for Coahoma Co, MS. She and Alexander were married at Friar's Point, Coahoma Co, MS abt 1868. Does anyone have the 1870 or 1880 censuses for Coahoma Co, MS or Ashley Co, AR? Alexander would have been abt 33yrs old and Amanda abt 47 in 1870. In 1880 they should have a son, John age 6 (born in March? of 1874). In 1870, deBastrop twnshp, Ashley Co, AR, there is a Jane Stewart age 51 (John's wife?) with Kinman (spelling is questionable) age 18 and Emma age 12. [could Kinman & Emma be servants? Would they have used the surname Stewart?] 1900 census; same twnshp, same county, there is Alexander, head of household; age 63 Amanda, age 77 Mary Williams (niece) age 44 John W. (son) age 26 Lula (nee Lindsey-daughter-in-law) age 25 William A. bn 1895 (my grandfather) Manda M. (Amanda) bn 1896 John E. bn 1898 [no Jane, no Kinman, no Emma-where did they go?] John and Lula had Nannie Adele Stewart in 1902; Amanda died abt 1905; John "disappeared" and Lula moved back home to her father, Harrison B. Lindsey with her four children around 1905. According to my aunt and mother, Lula moved home because it was unseemly to remain living with Alexander being there were no other women in the household and her husband had "gone west". What could have possibly happened to John W. Stewart? Family folklore has it that he was missing a leg. Is there anyone who could do a look-up to see whether John & Lula divorced in 1905, Ashley Co, AR? My grandfather would not discuss his father, John W. Lula moved to Florida to help my grandfather raise my mother and aunt in 1945. Joyce, there were Mortality Records for AR. The years were 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880. Surely someone has the book and would do a look up, but I can't put my finger on who that would be. Hope this helps. Cathy Switzer Conn RE: SWITZER, CHADWICK, TAYLOR, HAMILTON, DOWTHARD, ROBERTSON, MANES.
I've been documenting everything I've gathered on my in-law family and sent a copy over to my mother-in-law to proof. I wrote that they traveled to Arkansas by "horse and buggy". She corrected it and put by "wagon train". Can someone tell me just what exactly is a "wagon train"? Thank-you! Susan Jones ----- Original Message -----
I am looking for information on William Stephen Harris and his parents . He was born October 28, 1898 in Mammoth Springs, AR, and married Jessie Ann Clark on Nov 6, 1919 in Lawrence City. His mother was Ada Mason. I think that his father died on April 28, 1899 and was named William Stephen Harris also. The family still lives in the same vicinity to this day so I imagine that the father died near Mammoth Springs. I would appreciate a lookup for any information or help that you can give me. I am just starting to do genealogical research. What a rich source of information this forum is! Thank you. C. Tucker Portland, Oregon

Joyce, This is his degrees. You mentioned the lodge number, you may be able to contact the lodge, if it still exist. Remember to address the query to the Master of the Lodge and request it to be read in open lodge. This way a member may take it upon them self to help. Also remember that your writing to a lodge of masons and not genealogist. Give as much information as you have and write it in a manner that would be pleasing to read. Hope this helps, Dennis "Hutton (by way of Jan Davenport )" wrote: > Hi List members, > > My letter to the Grand Lodge F&A Masons, Little Rock, was answered. > There was not a lot on information, but some is certainly welcomed, > right? > > They informed me that a fire destroyed records in 1919. The Land Entry file is different from the Patent that is available online. Although land entry files usually include limited genealogical information, they do offer glimpses into the life of our ancestors. One can order the correct form for land entries from the NARA site at the following URL. http://www.nara.gov/research/ordering/ordrfrms.html The dimensions of a house, corn crib, number of fruit trees may seem rather mundane but these are details that we may not find in other records. One may be surprised to find that an ancestor paid for the land in gold. Sometimes there is wonderful information about the members of the household at the time of application and affidavits from neighbors testifying to the length of residence of the applicant. Sometimes there is little other than the brief application. I have never regretted the financial investment I have made in any of the many land entry files that I have ordered. Every small bit of information that I find about my ancestors is cause for celebration. Does anyone know if Mortality Census were taken in Arkansas? I have found some on other states and was wondering if Arkansas possible had them. Thanks, Joyce billh@wizards.net
