    3. I don't know if this is relevant as I didn't see the original post. There is a Quitman GA in Brooks County. If someone is looking for a town named Quitman and not necessarily one in AR this may be helpful. Bill Rowan in San Antonio billandjo@msn.com -----Original Message----- From: by way of Jan Davenport <jan.davenport@att.net> [mailto:tootncmon@webtv.net] Sent: Sunday, May 07, 2000 6:40 PM To: AGS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [AGS] Quitman The web site below shows a Quitman in Cleburne County. It only lists one Quitman, so that could be it, since this site will also show 'historical' populated places that don't currently exist. http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html tootncmon

    1. [AGS] Graves in Boone Co AR 1870's
    2. billandjo
    3. Okay good people I really need some help verifying who my grandmother's parents are. My grandmother, Clara Bell Graves, b. Jan 19, 1877, Harrison, Boone CO AR. Death certificate lists parents as George W Graves and Debbie Doyle. That is all the verified info I have. There was a marriage of G.W. Graves and W.J. (or W.K.) Doyle in Boone CO AR, Aug 29, 1875. I have not been able to match G.W and W.K. to George and Debbie. (Debbie seems like an odd nickname for a name starting with W, K or J. but I'm hoping it is.) I have tried, unsuccessfully, to find a G or George graves in the Boone CO censuses that had a household makeup that fit. I'm not familiar enough with AR to know what surrounding counties to look at. I feel like I've poured over the microfilms of all the AR counties from 1880 to 1910, but I just can't find a household with the makeup I'm looking for. Is there any body out there who can help? Please!!! Bill Rowan in San Antonio billandjo@msn.com

    1. [AGS] Civil War Story
    2. Here is a story I found on another list. One story from the civil war It all began in 1862 during the Civil War, when Union Army Captain Robert Ellicombe was with his men near Harrison's Landing in Virginia. The Confederate Army was on the other side of the narrow strip of land. During the night, Captain Ellicombe heard the moan of a soldier who lay mortally wounded on the field. Not knowing if it was Union or Confederate, the captain decided to risk his life and bring the stricken man back for medical attention. Crawling on his stomach through the gunfire, the captain reached the stricken soldier and began pulling him toward his encampment. When the captain finally reached his own lines, he discovered it was actually a Confederate soldier, but the soldier was dead. The captain lit a lantern. Suddenly, he caught his breath and went numb with shock. In the dim light, he saw the face of the soldier. It was his son. The boy had been studying music in the South when the war broke out. Without telling his father, he enlisted in the Confederate Army. The following morning, heartbroken, the father asked permission of his superiors to give his son a full military burial despite his enemy status. His request was partially granted. The captain had asked if he could have a group of Army ban members play a funeral dirge for the son at the funeral. That request was turned down since the soldier was Confederate. Out of respect for the father, they did say they could give him only on musician. The captain chose a bugler. He asked the bugler to play a series of musical notes he had found on a piece of paper in the pocket of his dead son's uniform. This wish was granted. The music was the haunting melody we now know as "Taps" that is used at all military funerals. Day is done, Gone the Sun, From the lakes, From the hills, From the sky. All is well. Safely rest. God is nigh. Not sure if true, but interesting to me and others. I hope you enjoy Debbie

    2. Dear JoAnn, I'm going to the Conway County Courthouse to do another marriage lookup, and while I'm at it I'll look for Dorothy Shumate and Harry Boyd. I live about an hours drive away, (my family is from Conway County) and will get over there sometime this week and have a look. If you don't hear from me, please remind me, as I've been known to lose emails! Sincerely, Jan Anybody else? Don't mind a bit.

    3. I am new to the list and am researching the BIGGS family. Maybe you can help me with 2 questions. 1. I have found a biography of sorts for William Kesner Biggs in a History of the Methodist Church. It states he died in Quitman on 11/6/1913. I have not been abt. to locate Quitman in any AR county for 1910 census. Any ideas? 2. I have Joseph(us) C. Biggs who is said to have been committed to the insane asylum in Pulaski County in 1893 but have not been able to find any information on an asylum. Any help here? Regards - Michele mybranch@swbell.net
