    1. [AGS] Using Land Records
    2. Hello All, I have been researching for about 15 years and have never used land records. I have gone to the site and looked but don't really know how to use them. Is there some kind soul out there who can give some pointers on how to use them. I have gone on the basic notion that I need to know the exact location in order for land records to be beneficial and that is all rather sketchy info at the moment. Thanks for any clues you can provide. Anita

    3. Dear Friends, the definitions below do make sense. These activities, especially no. 2, appear to be something two teen-age boys could do. (I suppose the boys could strip the fibers from the cards by hand, but the second definition seems more likely.) I was puzzled, since I have never run across this term before. Thank you for all your help. 3. My Grandmother, Etta Fox (Williams) came to Pine Bluff, AR in 1883 with her father when she was eight. She married Warren J. Williams ... children, Annetta Williams Talbot, Ione Williams Terry, Frank Williams(d), Vivian Williams(d), and Bobbye Williams Duffy. Grandmother's sisters, Birdie Fox and May Fox never married. The Vahey side (maternal) either changed the spelling of their name or they didn't come out of Ireland as we have thought. Anyway, the Vahey family has added an additional wing to the ever growing brick wall. Joseph Fox is reported to have come west from New York, but there are so many Joseph Fox's from NY that we have not been able to comfirm which person was our gg. We had a cousin, Jane Fox Driver, whose family once lived in Blytheville, AR. We think that she has all the Fox genealogy because she was in DAR. But, we have no idea how to get in touch with any of them... One of our search team, Linda Duffy Ross, used to write Jane Driver when she was a little girl, after the Drivers moved to Virginia. She has lost track of this family connection. Can anyone help us find Jane Fox Driver, so that we may fill in many of the blanks in at least one side of our family tree? Appreciate the help. 1. [AGS] DAVIDSON
    2. Bradley Hicks
    3. Hello. I'm new to this list and hoping that someone can help. I'm looking for info on John Edwin DAVIDSON and wife Mary Neill HOLMES. They lived in Benton Co, AR from early 1830's until last shown in census of 1860. John Edwin would have been about 73 in 1860. They had many children: Edwin Blackburn (who moved to Texas around 1850), Jonah, Harvey, John, Sydney, Sarah Elizabeth, Mary, George, and Benjamin. After the 1860 census these guys just disappear. I've not found anyone who has a death date or location for John Edwin or Mary, although some of the children have been tracked down. Mary apparently had a brother named Phineas Holmes and wife Rachel Stuart who died in Benton Co. Another researcher has gone to Benton Co. himself to try and find a death date or place of burial for John Edwin and Mary but could not find anything. So my question is, does anybody out there know anything about this DAVIDSON family? Could they have moved somewhere else in Arkansas that late in life? Thanks so much, Vicki

    1. [AGS] Mass Postings
    2. I would like to caution everyone about mass postings and mas forwarding, PLEASE don't to it. It can present a serious problem for Rootsweb. The following in quoted from a message received by another board member. Brian Leverich told me that with 18,000+ lists on Rootsweb, when they are hit by a "mass-mailing", it costs them around $10,000 to clean it up. Not to mention the downtime to all of us because the servers crash and the list mail isn't flowing. I know it is very important to keep the AHC alive, but it is also critical that Rootsweb not get mad at us over this! -Melissa Please folks lets not to nay crossposting ot mass mailings. Rootsweb is good to us, so lets not to anything to harm the great servive they provide us Jan Davenport AGS List Administrator

    1. Re: [AGS] Mortality Census
    2. Bobbie Jones McLane
    3. In 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880, census enumerators were directed to secure, in addition to the usual required census data, information as to all persons dying within the twelve monhs preceding the taking of the census. These lists, which were filed in Washington, became known as the "Mortality Schedules." These schedules contain valuable information for genealogists and historians, as they antedate the establishment of vital records in the majority of the states, certainly in Arkansas. They report 13 percent of all deaths during this period, which is just when those born in the 1790-1810 decades were completing the normal lifespan. My "Arkansas Ancestors" published these schedules for Arkansas in 1968 and these volumes are available in libraries throughout the country and are well worth checking if you have ancestors in Arkansas in this time period. Some of you may remember Mrs. Frances Bowles, long-time employee at the Arkansas History Commission. She first introduced me to these schedules many years ago as a possible way of locating people in Arkansas, long before there were printed Indices to the Census records.
