    3. I received this from another list. Euna http://www.headstonehunter.com/ While still a relatively new site, only one month old, it has already received Ancestry.com's Family History Favorite award and Family Tree Magazine's Site of the Day award. If you are interested in either requesting photographs from those far away cemeteries or in helping other researchers by photographing stones in your local cemeteries, then you will definitely want to more fully investigate this web site. You can visit it by visiting http://www.headstonehunter.com/

    1. [AGS] Easter Flinn
    2. joanne krause
    3. My ggrandfather, Thomas Flinn, immigrated in 1849 with his father, Lawrence Flinn, his sister, Easter, and his brother, John. Thomas married in Wisconsin in 1856. I have never found any trace of the rest of the family. Recently, while browsing in My Family Tree I found that "Easter Flinn" had purchased land in one of eight states. Shortly after, I found Land Records in Arkansas and checked for the name - there she was! I have not established that this is my Easter Flinn, but it is such an unusual name that I feel that it is. She purchased land in Grant County, Arkansas 1 March 1860. Adjacent to her land was a purchase by Martin Flinn. I do not know the relationship between these two. So far, I have found no further information. I hope soon to look at census records but in the meantime, I would appreciate any suggestions for further research and/or contact with anyone who might have information about these people. Specifically, the purchases were made at the Land Office in Little Rock, and were for 80 acres each in Township 5-S, Range 12-W.

    1. [AGS] Land Records
    2. At the BLM site, you can search land patents by filling in only ONE field. If you know more, then you should fill in more. You DO NOT have to know where the land is located. For example, I know that my great grandfather homesteaded land in Clark county, Arkansas. Now I can fill in only his last name, but why do that since I do know the other information? On the other hand, if I were not sure about the other information, I would enter just the name, or even just the surname. You may need to try variations on the name, first and last. I happen to know that my ggf appears in the 1870 census with a surname spelling different than what is currently used, so that would be another option to try. tootncmon

    3. Jo Anna: You might be surprised at the amount of work 14 and 15 year olds did 60 or 70 years ago. My Mom, who will soon be 86, started to work in the Cotton Mills in Gibson County, Tn., before her 15th birthday. She was doing a full days work same as the adults. They worked 10 hour days, 5 and 1/2 days a week,,,their pay was 13.00 per week. " The good old days," that's what some people called them.

    1. [AGS] Houstons in Arkansas
    2. dean
    3. I have just joined this list and I'm seeing mostly obituaries here. I apologize for posting here if this list is mainly for obituaries. Maybe someone can help me. Searching for descendants or relatives of James Decatur Houston, died Nov 5, 1889 at Mt. Magazine(?) in Logan County, Arkansas. His wife was Nancy Grider Mitchell. Also, Martha Ann Houston, b. 1817............ I have a letter from Oliver Houstons wife, (Oliver Houston, b. 1788 d. 1853 Coweta Co, GA) Martha Ann Houston (my great-grandparents) dated and postmarked April 22, 1892 at "Hurricane, Ark" to my grandfather J. C. Houston at Milltown, Alabama. I've always thought this was strange since I was not aware, neither was my mother, that any of our Houstons had moved to Arkansas. Hurricane, Ark, was located in "Selene County" (not sure of the spelling) and if I'm not mistaken, Hurricane no longer exists except as possibly a suburb of Little Rock, and I'm not sure of this. My tree says that James Decatur Houston and Oliver Houston were "1st cousins once removed". Any information on these relatives or descendants will be appreciated! Thanks, Dean Moore
