I have a picture that was sent to me of Levi Alexander Miller, his wife Dicy, and some of their children. It came from a set of books about Howard County, Arkansas. The books had no title. I have been trying to locate the books, in the hope of finding more information about my family. If you have these books, would greatly appreciate hearing from you- Sandy Scofield [email protected]
Greetings, does anyone have access to the census for Union County, AR. for the year 1900? I am looking for any Calbert/Calvert/Culvert surnames that would have lived in Wilmington or Johnson township for that year. Thanks, and have yourself a wonderful day! Dena.
Jean, You may get military records from the National Archives. They have special forms that you must use depending upon which war the veteran served in. Check the NARA.gov website and you can print off one of the forms, but it might not be the correct one that you will need for WW I veteran. There is Form 85, Form 86, etc. If the one you may print is not the correct one, you may request them to send you the correct form from their website. It will take about a month to get the form via mail, but you must use their form, so be patient. That is one thing that family history/genealogy research teaches us......Patience! Good Luck, Kathy

Helen: I looked on the 1830, 1840, 1850 and 1860 index to AR but located none of these folks. In fact there are very few folks in Arkansas with this name. Before the Civil War what is now OK was Indian Territory. However, the area is often spoken of as the area "west of Arkansas". It is possible that the family lived out in OK somewhere. sorry. Van Buren Press Crawford County, Arkansas September 24, 1910 NOTORIOUS CROOK LEAVES NOTE FOR JAILER Fayetteville, September 19.-A jail delivery of the boldest character was effected here last night. George Reed, a notorious crook in Fort Smith, who was jailed here on a charge of being implicated in the recent robbery at Winslow, escaped from the crazy cell, leaving a sarcastic noted to the sheriff of the county, thanking him for his treatment and good food, and asking that the sheriff send his best regards to Chief Johnson of Fort Smith. A horse was stolen from J H McIlroy of this place last night, and it is supposed that Reed stole this horse to make his escape. Tracks of the crook were found at Sommera, near here. A strange man was seen riding a horse similar to the description of the stolen horse and a woman riding a smaller horse was seen accompanying him. Reed was implicated in the case with Pearl Starr, a noted resort keeper at Fort Smith, who is charged as being the ringleader in the theft of valuable goods at Winslow. Hello I am new to this list and I am lost. We have been looking for our grandfather. He married Mrs. Rowena "May" BLAYLOCK MURPHY who was born in Arkansas, probably Yell Co., 1876. Impossible to find a John ATTEBERRY born the same date, (abt. 1877-88)and most of the Atteberry and spelling variations are genealogically mapped. So ran into one line who has a Johnny ATTEBERRY born circa 1880. Now it is believed that this Johnny went to Arkansas when he was 16. He has never been tracked (impossible). He is only known of by a 93 yr old Atteberry of that line (so family hearsay). It has been said by this man that Johnny made contact with the family in 1936 or 1937, stating that he was working or owned a peach orchard. My John Atteberry first shows up in 1910 Union County, OR census showing he and "May's" first child born in Oklahoma 1908 and married 1906. I would have thought May was still living in Arkansas at that point but guess not. So it shows her older MURPHY children being born in Oklahoma by 1903...earliest. She must have married MURPHY in OK. Wonder if anyone has any advice or history of peach orchards in 1937. I am definately digging for straws here. But am really trying to find my grandfather. He may have left Arkansas to be in Oklahoma by 1945, not sure just a guess. With Regards, -- Thanks, Sandy Please visit my homepage and see if you have any clues in my hunt for my elusive grandfather http://www.rootssearch.net/mygensite/sscarletgen/index.html Searching for the Ancestry of John ATTEBERRY __________________________________________________________________ Your favorite stores, helpful shopping tools and great gift ideas. I learn something new everytime I read these old newspapers. I was aware that Pearl Starr owned a "house of ill repute" in Fort Smith, but had no idea that she also owned one at Winslow! Van Buren Press Crawford County, Arkansas September 17, 1910 RED LIGHT PROPRIETOR UNDER ARREST Fayetteville, Sept. 10.- As the result of a might slick piece of detective work on the part of Deputy Sheriff Reed of Fayetteville, Pearl Starr and Mamie McDonald, of Fort Smith, and a party who gave his name as J E French are under arrest here, charged with grand larceny and burglary. A fourth party who has been going under the name of George L Reid, who is supposed to be connected with the crime is still at large but his arrest is expected in a few hours, as he is practically located by Washington County officials. On Wednesday night of last week the Stockburger & Miller Mercantile Company' s store at Winslow, was broken into and goods to the value of $250 were stolen. Sheriff Reid was at once notified and went to work on the case. From a drayman at Winslow he learned that Mamie McDonald, who has charge of the Pearl Starr House at that place, had warned him to take his money out of the Winslow Bank. At this time the drayman was taking the McDonald woman home and she was in an intoxicated condition and talked freely. She stated that she had overheard a conversation and advised the drayman to take care of his money. >From that time on Sheriff Reed kept a strict watch over the Starr Home. Friday, he saw the same drayman taking Pearl Starr from the train to her Winslow home and on questioning the drayman found that a large trunk had been take out for her. That evening the drayman hauled the trunk back to the depot, heavily packed. The trunk was a once opened and a part of the missing goods found. The Constable at Winslow was ordered to search the Starr Home and the remaining goods were found packed ready for shipment. Pearl Starr, Mamie McDonald, J E French and G L Reid were arrested, but the last named party escaped the officer. The other three were brought to this city and appeared before Justice Elliot, but the hearing was continued until the 15th and the defendants were put under a $1,000 bond each. Attorney Hiner, of Fort Smith, is representing them. Fran Alverson Warren e-mail: [email protected] 501-369-2703 http://www.crawfordcountyarkansas.net/
Van Buren Press Crawford County, Arkansas July 16, 1910 John A Liggett, aged 67 years, an inmate of the Confederate Home, was found dead in bed Tuesday. He came to Pulaski County from eastern Kentucky some two weeks ago, later entering the home. He was in indigent circumstances. So far as known he left no relatives. He was a member of Company I, 30 Texas Cavalry, Ganos Brigade, and had papers to show he had a gallant record as a private soldier. He later became a stock dealer in Kentucky. Van Buren Press Crawford County, Arkansas July 2, 1910 THE BIG FOURTH Monday, July 4, promises to be a very quiet day for Van Buren, as most of our leading merchants have agreed to close their stores all day and give their employees a holiday. Several picnics will be held at different points in the county, but the biggest one of them all will be at Uniontown. This little city promises all who attend that they will not have a pig race, nor a fat man's race, nor any "monkey" business, but that they will have a picnic and social reunion, with good speaking, singing, swinging and drinking pop and lemonade. They will also have Cherokee singing by work and note by full blood Cherokees. This picnic will be under the management of the school directors of that thriving little city which is a guarantee in itself that all of our citizens who attend are assured a good time. Van Buren Press Crawford County, Arkansas March 5, 1910 Mrs. Mary Corney, who has gained so much notoriety through chasing her husband all over the state and having set aside two divorces he obtained, has returned to Fort Smith. She disappeared some time ago and, failing to show up when a suit against her husband was called, it was thought she had met with foul play. She went to Tulsa to secure evidence against her husband, and while there lunacy proceedings were instituted against her, and she was locked up. On gaining her release she filed a suit for $5,000 damages for false pretenses. Fran Alverson Warren e-mail: [email protected] 501-369-2703 http://www.crawfordcountyarkansas.net/
Rev. William C. Johnson was the pastor of the El Dorado, AR Baptist Church from 1858 until 1867. I am trying to find out what happened to him after 1867. He seems to have left the state. Was he the same man as Rev. William c. Johnson, who was a Methodist minister in Little Rock about 1880? Russell P. My Great Grandma's 2nd husband was committed by his son for being senile, they lived in Dardenelle, AR and he was sent to Little Rock Hospital for Nervous Disease 1919. I sent for his papers many years ago and they sent them to me and it showed the interview by the Dr. He died 10 days after commitment. But it told the many battles he had fought in the Civil War and who he fought under. It was very interesting. I don't know if the address is still good or if they will send the papers now. Good luck Arkansas State Hospital 4313 West Markham Little Rock, AR 72201 Charlene, Alta Loma, CA
