Could someone please enlighten me as to the precise location of Polk Township & Bayou Meto Township. Both are listed as Arkansas County in the census of 1850 & 1860. A map would be superb. I found a Bayou Meto Township just south of Lonoke but it isn't in Arkansas County. Did the County line move significantly? Thanks for any assistance. Shirley Erickson
I am trying to find where to get some Civil War pension records. I was told the only place to get Confederate pension records was from the state they served in, which is Arkansas. I would like to order a set of pension records for a man who died in 1908 in Ok but I found in some loose probate records where the mother of his daughter was the gdn of the child and she was receiving military payments from the US Pension Agency. He was 68 in 1908 when he died. Is there some place I can get there records. The mother and daughter were living in Montgomery Co. Ar at that time. Thank you for any help. Jean

Van Buren Press Crawford County, Arkansas June 25, 1887 A BLOODY MURDER The Assassin Captured. Clarksville, Ark., June 21. – The quiet of our town was broken this morning by a man riding on a horse wet with perspiration, and inquiring for the sheriff, stating that B F Truelove, living four miles west of this place had been ambushed and shot through the heart while plowing corn this morning. Sheriff Jett and a posse were soon mounted and off for the scene of the dastardly act. Everybody was excited and eager to know the correctness and cause of the murder, for this is the first one in the county for a long time. The sheriff returned in about an hour bringing with him as prisoner John Evans, who made a confession to the deed and on being interviewed in jail by the Gazette Reporter, made the following statement: I am John Evans, formerly of Wilson and Cannon Counties, Tennessee. I have been in this state and county about two years. I shot Mr. Truelove this morning. I went to make a crop on his place this year, and he being a very quarrelsome man, everybody predicted that he would whip me before the year was out. I said I guessed not. Everything moved on well until about two weeks ago, when I sold my crop to Monk Harris. Mr. Truelove and I settled up at that time, I owing him $3.50 which Mr. Harris assumed satisfactorily to Mr. Truelove. But Truelove and I owned a razor in partnership, worth about fifty cents. He demanded the razor. I told him to set his price and I would give or take. He swore he would do nothing of the kind, but he would beat hell out of me if I did not give him the razor. I did not do it but left him. He then told Harris that he would have the razor or my blood. He also told Richards and Shackelford that he was going to kill me, that no such damned coward as I should boast around him. That was several days ago. Yesterday I went to Truelove’s house to gear my mule to go to plowing. He was lying on the porch, raised up and asked me about the razor. I told him I would do what was right about it, but he commenced to abuse me and drew a stick over my head and threatened to “wear me out”. I then left the premises, went out in the neighborhood and borrowed a gun from a neighbor telling him I wanted to go a hunting. But I did not. I meant to kill Truelove. I loaded the gun with fine No. 1 buckshot and this morning I went to the field where he was plowing and told him I had come to settle that little business. He said, “alright, let yourself in,” and I shot him and started to town to surrender myself. I am 26 or 27 years old. Never had any serious trouble before. -Little Rock Gazette. Van Buren Press Crawford County, Arkansas March 26, 1887 Camp Creek, Indian Territory, March 23. Editor Press: A man's skeleton was discovered by Frank Kimberlin in the Going Lake, 8 miles above Fort Smith, in the Cherokee Nation. A party of men were notified today and this afternoon went to the place and found several bones of a man and a pocket knife, a lead pencil, an indelible pencil, a pencil holder was fastened in his vest pocket. A portion of his clothing was scattered around the place. The man had been very well dressed in black clothes. A black turban hat with eyelets in each side and pieces of a leather pocketbook were found. No papers were found at all. Some hair found on the skull shows that he had brown hair. From all appearances he had been dead for 5 or 6 months. Pieces of a red cotton handkerchief with white spots on it and also part of a blue percal shirt was found. The knife had a black handle, a small piece was broken off the handle. No trace of identification has yet been discovered. It is supposed he had been murdered and thrown in the lake. Mr. Len Miye has taken the bones and a part of the clothing, etc., to Fort Smith to the U S Court House. It is hoped some one will identify them. P. S. If received in time to publish will you do so in your next issue. Respectfully, J A Alfred. Fran Alverson Warren e-mail: [email protected] 501-369-2703 http://www.crawfordcountyarkansas.net/

It looks like he died on 12/07/19??. If anyone can tell me the year or the Cemetery that he may have been buried in, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Pat
How would you like to read these articles in your Christmas Newspaper? Van Buren Press Crawford County, Arkansas December 25, 1886 SAM STARR KILLED Fort Smith Tribune- Well authenticated reports have been received that this notorious Indian was killed on last Saturday and that his last act in life was to kill his slayer. A feud had existed for over fifty years between the Foreman and Starr families, in which many lives have been sacrificed. Ben Foreman was an Indian Policeman and assisted in the first arrest of Belle Starr, the wife of Sam. This only intensified the feelings of hatred existing between the parties. Subsequently and only a few months ago, Ben Foreman, with others, attempted the arrest of Sam Starr. A fight ensued, during which Sam was badly wounded and his horse killed. Sam was captured, but wounded as he was, succeeded in escaping from the guard and secreting himself in the hills near Younger's Bend, the home of the outlaw and his family. His wife, Belle, went to his aid and, placing him upon a horse, they swam the river and came to this city where Sam surrendered himself to the U S Marshal. Belle was afraid that Sam would be killed by his neighbors and has carefully guarded him. But it seems that on last Saturday night they both started for this city. After coming some distance they stopped at a house where a dance was in progress. Ben Foreman chanced to be present and soon he and Sam became involved in a quarrel about the horse which had been killed by the Foreman posse, Starr demanding pay for the animal. Foreman drew his pistol and Starr quickly responded. Their shots were almost in unison and Starr fell dead with a bullet through his heart. Foreman having his neck broken by Sam's bullet and dying in a few minutes. But two shots were fired, both fatal, and one of the bullets grazed the head of a boy standing near, inflicting a slight wound. The death of these two well-known characters will probably put an end to the vendetta which has so long disgraced the Cherokee Nation. BRANDED HIS CHILD-WIFE Texarkana, Ark., December 16.-James Howard, aged thirty-five years, was taken from jail here last night by a masked mob, carried a short distance below the town and hanged to a railroad trestle. Howard was arrested Wednesday on a warrant sworn out by his mother in law, charging him with maltreating his wife, who is scarcely fourteen years old. Howard and his wife were married last July. Mrs. Howard says he frequently tied her feet together while she was in a state of nudity, and, hanging her up by the bare feet, beat her unmercifully and threatened to kill her if he told any one of his cruelties. On November 1st, Howard took a branding iron used to brand live stock, and heating it red hot branded a large letter "H" on his wife's person in two places while she was tied to a bed. After suffering several weeks from these burns Mrs. Howard told her mother what had happened, and Howard was arrested. The sheriff anticipated that a mob would attack he jail last night and had employed extra guards, but the mob gained entrance while the guards were eating a midnight meal. Arkansas Gazette, December 17, 1915: Fort Smith, Dec. 16 - Miss Adeline Ish, aged 90, a pioneer resident of Washington county, died at her home at Morrow yesterday in her ninetieth year. She was a member of a colonial family that settled in Pennsylvania and later moved to what is now Tennessee. Her grandfather was killed by Indians within sight of the blockhouse at Knoxville. He had served in the American army under General Sevier. Miss Ish's father served two enlistments in the War of 1812, and after being mustered out of the service he removed to Arkansas before this state was admitted to the Union. Miss Ish died on the homestead he founded. Miss Ish labored several years as a missionary among the Indians at Asbury Mission, which was located where the present town of Eufaula, Okla., now stands. She leaves a sister, Mrs. S. J. Parke of this city, and a brother, W. W. Ish of Red Oak, Okla. _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx

Van Buren Press Crawford County, Arkansas August 14, 1877 HYDROPHOBIA CURE Take grated Horse Radish root, vinegar and sweet oil- that which is put up in bottles and sold by the grocers. Give the patient all he can eat and keep on his stomach, and at times apply to the wound as a poultice, changing it every few hours. During the Civil War a squad of soldiers were sent to a point for observation some 20 miles from camp. In passing a farm-house they were attacked by a furious little dog and before he could be killed he had bitten two of the men. The next day one of these men was attacked with spasms and every symptom of hydrophobia. The messenger was sent to headquarters for a surgeon. The man suffered so much that the command who had cured snake bites with the above remedy, and having a bottle of Horse-radish among his rations, applied it as above described. Before the surgeon arrived the man was entirely relieved from spasms, but at the same time another man was taken with like spasms. The surgeon learning the symptoms and what had been done for the first man, had the second man treated in the same way and with the same happy effect. In two or three days both men were as well as ever and continued so. The writer had this information from the officer in charge, and seeing that this horrible malady is appearing frequently this season, deems it his duty to give it to the public.
