Good afternoon everyone; I am new to the list so bare with me........ I am in search of any info on my Grandmother who died in February 10, 1927 Minerva C Hughes Rosson; born 1884 in Hamilton County, Illinois in July. I thought I had the correct cemetery from my Dad (now deceased) his oldest sister, (now deceased) and now the other sister has memory problems but upon going to this particular cem. I found nothing about her. There is no death cert for her, there is no birth cert for her from Illinois, she taught school in Ripley County, Missouri; where she lived for at least 10 years. I need guidance as to how to find this info; if possible. I do know that her parents are from Hamilton County, Illinois and moved to Ripley county, Mo around 1900 or a little after. I have proof she taught school in Missouri from the area newspaper. I have had some very good advise from someone in Clay County but it fell through. Help me if you can................Sheila B
The very best protection against all these rampant worms and viruses is to get, install, AND keep up-to-date some reputable and effective anti-virus program. There are several good ones available: Norton, McAfee, Panda, AVG, and others. Tricks with your address book probably will not stop a virus like the current KLEZ. And, recently, I've heard that even Netscape and Eudora have been targeted. So, be alert. Vernon, Search the National Archives for copies of veterans records. Ask them to send NATF Form 80 address is National Archives / Records Administration, 700 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20408 Ask for complete file as that way you will get all the information. There is a small fee. Give the information of your Civil War family member. Also I think they have a website too. Linda/WA
My solution to not sending out a virus is I never save any e-mail address in my address book, that way I'll never send a virus to any one. (If I get infected) So far that hasn't happened. I save the email address some where else. Stop CA Senate Bill 1614 * * * Please forward to every patriotic citizen you know * * * July 15, 2002 This is a Call to Action to all California and US citizens. The California State Legislature is considering Senate Bill 1614, a piece of legislation designed to remove the California birth and death indices from the protection of the California Public Records Act and make these public records off limits to citizens. Senator Jackie Speier, author of SB 1614, claims we need her protection from identity thieves and terrorists and that this bill will keep us safe. No evidence of misuse of the birth or death indices has been put forward. There is NO LINK of these indices to identity theft, cloning, fraud or terrorist acts. Absolutely NONE. In fact, many legitimate users of these indices include: genealogists, journalists, adult adoptees, California bankers, licensed investigators and insurance companies. Many California based businesses use the indices to validate identity and assure proper account access, in essence a protection from identity fraud, terrorist actions, and government abuse. Add your voice to the many who oppose SB 1614. Klaus, You sound up to date on computer protection. Included in Norton's System Works is firewall protection for back door Trojan attacks. I like you have my address all over the place. In my business, my Email address happens to be all over the world.(probably most of us are, another interesting situation for another day). My understanding is there are "basically" viruses, worms and Trojan horses. Viruses, worms enter in the "front door" of your computer using your Internet Service Provider(ISP), maybe DSL or Dish or whatever other delivery system you use for data bits. Trojan horses access your computer through the "back door" i.e., (1) an open port, (2) a configured port not currently hooked up to any peripheral, (3) an unused port, or the one your regularly use to access the internet. If any of these ports "blinks" and lets the Trojan horse access you machine, I within four hours I could easily find out everything on your hard drive, or more sinister and evil permanently damage the hard drive. Unfortunately, not everyone on line are ethical, honest, family members like us. Scary. At my knowledge level, I can probably handle any attack that comes down the wire.(Please, God, forgive me if I sound arrogant, that is not my intention). I say this because for the Average Joe and Jane computer user, lacking the chance to build computers as I do, don't try homemade fixes. The people that write these heinous programs are Evil, they goal is to cause angst and fear in us. Understanding this issue is our hole card and our safety. The people at McAfee and others are working 24/7 to successfully thwart these criminals. Get coverage for all three of these threats. I am sure MacAfee has similar products. Several years ago, I had bad luck with their products and am now attenuated to Norton. I suspect a backdoor system seven Trojan horse has gotten into the web site that lists the California Petition Signature record of names. Urban terrorism. Any thoughts? Gary

This is pure BS. One of the "features" of the KLEZ virus is the fact that it will send out email messages from the infected computer, but it will also take email addresses out of that computer's address book and place them into the "From" field. End result is you will get a message from some mail administrator telling you that your message was undeliverable because it contained a virus or had an executable attachment. In other words, you can get one of these undeliverable notifications without having the virus in your machine. I am a real fanatic when it comes to virus protection. I use McAfee Virus Scan and it has (knock on wood) kept my computer clean. I do a lot of selling on eBay, so my email address is probable spread all over hell's half acre. I receive on the average about 6 - 10 undeliverables a day that I did not originate. Viruses do not reside in your email address book or in your email account. The viruses reside on your hard drive. They are a resident in the operating system you use. I use Windows XP, because I use my computer professionally and want many advanced features. No matter the type of operating system you use, if you have a virus in your machine, YOU CANNOT DECEIVE THE VIRUS IN GOING AWAY!!!!!! You must use a software program to find the virus, fix, eliminate or quarantine the virus. If you have a virus, you need to spend the money to get a antiviral program. You can get some free ones online, but they are much inferior to commercial versions and the store bought ones have free virus updates for a period of time. When you think about the amount of money you have spent on your computer and the fact if your computer is infected, you are sending out tons of grief to all you mail, the price seems reasonable. I recommend NORTON'S INTERNET SECURITY, be sure to get that! product title. Seems to me the cost is around $65 bucks. Watch for a rebate. This easy to use program will scan you computer, FIND your virus and get your machine cleaned out. I know of no other way to clean a machine out. A number of viruses operate differently, many will destroy ALL the data on your hard drive. I suggest buying a antiviral program today. Sorry for the demanding advice, remember viruses are electronic terrorism. I recommend you do this before you change your browser or email account. The virus is INSIDE your computer. The browser and email information is delivered from OUTSIDE your computer. Please forgive me if I have offended anyone, that is not my intention. Gary Judy, you need a new computer guy. A worm/virus will not wait to see if it has a valid email id to send to, it just sends out to every entry in your address book. You'll know it happened by receiving the undeliverable message as you described, but the horses will be out of the barn. If you don't want the expense of anti-virus software, use Netscape as your browser and email program. Worms are written to target Internet Explorer and Outlook. FW: How to Protect Your Address Book ----- Original Message ----- From: Judy To: undisclosed-recipients: Sent: Wednesday, July 17, 2002 2:49 PM Subject: FW: How to Protect Your Address Book Sounds like a good idea. Judy I checked this out with my "computer guy". He said it is valid but he uses ooooo. HOW TO PROTECT YOUR ADDRESS BOOK! I learned a computer trick today that's really ingenious in it's simplicity. As you may know, when/if a worm virus gets into your computer it heads straight for your email address book, and sends itself to everyone in there, thus infecting all your friends and associates. This trick won't keep the virus from getting into your computer, but it will stop it from using your address book to spread further, and it will alert you to the fact, that the worm has gotten into your system. Here's what you do: first, open your address book and click on "new contact", just as you would do if you were adding a new friend to your list of email addresses. In the window where you would type your friend's first name, type in AAAAAAA. Now, here's whatyou've done and why it works: the "name" AAAAAAA will be placed at the top of your address book as entry #1. This will be where the worm will start in an effort to send itself to all your friends. But when it tries to send itself to AAAAAAA, it will be undeliverable because of the phony email address you entered >> <<. If the first attempt fails (which it will because of the phony address), the worm goes no further and your friends will not be infected. Here's the second great advantage of this method: If an email cannot be delivered, you will be notified of this in your inbox almost immediately. Hence, if you ever get an email spelling you that an email addressed to A could not be delivered, you know right away that you have the worm virus in your system. You can take steps to get rid of it! Pretty slick huh? If everybody you know does this then you need not ever worry about opening mail from friends. Pass this on to all your friends.

I have searched the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors system, http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.htm, and found the name of one of my ancestors. The site stated that records for the Confederate soldiers were held by the State Archives. What is included in the records and how can I get a copy of these records? Hi List, I am looking for a Civil War Soldier, who died of disease, Oct 10, 1864, in Hosp. at Pine Bluff, Arkansas. I found the following information on line for Little Rock National Cemetery, "Greathouse, H C orig. bur. Hardins Lake, Arkansas Plot: 3 2686" not verified. Would Hardins Lake, have been a burial site for Civil War Soldier during 1864? Are there any records for this place? What would be the best way to contact the Little Rock National Cemetery, to see if this is our long lost family member? The soldier that I am looking for is; Henry C. Greathouse, Company I, 7th Reg't, Missouri Calvary. Any help will be appreciated, Thank you, Carol Greathouse
