    3. Trish: I have found a death entry in the Social Security Index that may be your Joseph Ray. I am pasting it below. I am also pasting a land entry. Is it too early? It is Pope Co. The last benefit is the burial benefit applied for if the person had a surviving spouse - evidently he was a widower so there was no last benefit sent anywhere. I am sending this to the list in case others are attempting to help find him. There were no other parties present at the time, and the circumstances as related by Mr. Johnson and as corroborated by the position of the body after the homicide show him to have been Justified. October 5, 1878 - Jas. WASHINGTON the negro who was found near the railroad week before last, died last Monday. During his illness he was kindly cared for by the city authorities and received constant attention at the hnds of some of our physicians. He was buried last Tuesday. May 31, 1879 - Charity CLAY - Early Thursday morning last, a colored woman, living in our city, arose and complained of having a slight headache but cooked breakfast for her family as usual, but a few moments afterwards fell dead on the floor. He was swimming with a number of other boys and took the cramps. One def (sic) boy was within three feet when Charlie went down but knew nothing of it. October 4, 1908 - PEAKE ... while Ed Peake was a Negro, he was an honorable man and stood for the highest in this community where he lived so long. December 1, 1910 - Uncle Dick SINQUEFIELD, died at Dalark last week, and in his death the colored race lost one of its ablest, best known and most useful members, and the state a good citizen. "Uncle Dick" as he was familiarly known, was raised at Holly Springs, Dallas County, and for ovr 50 years he had been preaching the gospel and in a varied line of activities to elevate his race. He was an honest and useful citizen and if the colored people generally would only follow the advice and teachings of "Uncle Dick" they would make much better and more useful citizens. ------------------------------------------- Introducing NetZero Long Distance Unlimited Long Distance only $29.95/ month! 1. [AGS] Lost Family...
    2. Greetings, well now, I have been searching for the last (possible) people who I believe my family acquired their surname from "GREEN." This has been a 3 year struggle, and I hope someone can help. Arkansas, the year probably abt. 1857-58, my family arrived from N. or S. Carolina. I haven't been able to determine if they came with their owners, or came to be sold to someone as a family unit. Anyway, my cousin found information regarding our family on the 1866 Freedman's Bureau Records Labor Contracts. Only the initials appear on the document 'W. H. Green' as the employer, and it lists my family as his employees. I find a William HH Green on the 1850 Bradley County census as being 9 years old. 1860, the man seems to be history, and this is the year I am very interested in..I know he lived in Milam County, TX. in 1870, but he was still in Arkansas in 1867, as he has a daughter listed on the 1870 Texas census as being born in Arkansas, as being 3 years old. I started searching for him in 1860 (he would have been 19) maybe he still lived with his mother, Mary..can't locate him or her. So, I'm stuck between 1850-60, can someone give some suggestions? I'm open to ALL at this point. Thanks! Dena

    3. If your ancestor, Black or white, was alive in Arkansas in 1942 and was born before 1902, he or she or his/her brother, sister, uncle, aunt, etc. may have had to file for a "delayed" or prior birth certificate. An index to these records has just been published by the Arkansas Genealogical Society (AGS), P. O. Box 908. Hot Springs, AR 71902. A hardback collectors edition of this work is currently available for $60.00. A CD edition will be available later for $30.00. Order may be sent to the AGS address. Russell P. 1. [AGS] ACTION ALERT- CA SB1614
    2. Nan & George Wolf
    3. Hi: This is for any California members on this list or for any member that plans to do research in California. Iris Carter Jones is the watchdog in Sacramento for the CA Genealogical Alliance. There is a RAPID E-MAIL CUT-N-PASTE at the very bottom of this message. Please, please use it. If you live in California - you have time for a snail mail to be sent by Aug 14. A piece of paper in the hand is harder to ignore than messages on a computer. Faxes also produce paper. We need a snowstorm in Sacramento. Regards, Nan [email protected] -------------Forwarded Message----------------- From: Iris Jones, INTERNET:[email protected] To: Master List 3, INTERNET:[email protected] "G.A.S. List", INTERNET:[email protected] Date: 8/10/02 12:05 PM RE: ACTION ALERT- CA SB1614 ALERT SB1614 - LEGISLATIVE UPDATE - AUGUST 10, 2002 Forgive me for not updating information during this last week, it has been like following the bouncing ball. Certainly more than you want to know. Where we stand right now is, SB1614's required waiver has not been granted, but it could at any time. Then SB1614 will move quickly through the process. It could be heard as early as Wednesday 14 August in Assembly Appropriations. The following ALERT has been shared by our 'partners in opposition.' It is imperative we let the committee members know of our objections. ----Iris Carter Jones, Legislative Network Coordinator, CSGA. ACTION ALERT CALIFORNIA SB1614, WHICH WILL REMOVE THE CALIFORNIA BIRTH AND DEATH INDICES FROM THE PUBLIC DOMAIN, IS ON A FAST TRACK TO THE STATE ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE ON APPROPRIATIONS. IMMEDIATE ACTION IS NEEDED. Heavy opposition has been mounted to kill SB1614. However, in the event that our efforts fail, this bill will rapidly move to the California State Assembly Committee on Appropriations as early as August 14th. We cannot wait for any more committees to wheel and deal. Full access to the Birth and Death Indices is at stake. We must act now. It is vital that you call, fax, and E-mail ALL MEMBERS OF THE CALIFORNIA STATE COMMITTEE ON APPROPRIATIONS IMMEDIATELY and urge a DO NOT PASS vote on SB1614. Tell the committee it must not spend taxpayer's money on a bill that won't do what it says it will do. SB1614 purports to solve the problems of identity theft by removing the birth and death indices from public domain. This bill is misdirected. It won't work because most experts agree that the majority of identity theft occurs through the literal theft of mail, purses, or wallets, through on-line and telephone scams, and occasionally through the misuse of birth and death CERTIFICATES—NOT the indices. In support of this fact, both the Department of Justice and the State’s Office of Privacy Protection confirm that neither office has documentation that the indices have been used for identity theft. SB1614 will cost the state of California more then $2 million dollars in the first year alone. In addition, there will be *annual* local mandated costs which will run into multimillions of dollars. In California's current budget CRISIS, taxpayer's dollars must not be used to fund a bill that won't work. VOTE NO ON SB1614 Read the full text at <http://info.sen.ca.gov/cgi-bin/postquery?bill_number=sb_1614&sess=CUR&house=B&site=sen> Please share this information with any adoption and genealogy lists you are on.
