    3. Jean: There a number of Johnsons buried in the Bassinger Cemetery near Caddo Cap. You can get a copy of the Montgomery County Cemetery Book from The Montgomery County Historical Society, P. O. Ar in the 1880's. I would like to know if there is any place I can send for his records about becoming a Dr? Did they have a school in Ar. or did they just learn from working with another Dr. and call themselves a Dr.?Benjamin had several children and lived in Mazarn and practiced medicine. His son,John, also lived in Mazarn. I found them on the 1900 census with his mother Clorinda living with him, next to his brother Sylvester Johnson. I am also looking for where Emaline Brown Johnson is buried. She was Sylvesters first wife. Thank you for your time and help. 1. [AGS] A Genie(olgist) in a Bottle...
    2. Good Friday evening all, well, ask and ye shall receive. This morning I received a message from a Genie from the AGS mailing list regarding my William H (AKA W.H.) Green. The following message: I've been reading your e-mails about your search. A William H. Green entered land from the government in present Lincoln County 1 October 1860. Lincoln County wasn't formed until 1871. Since the actual land entry was normally two or more years after actual arrival, this could match with your 1857 date. This was the west half of the northwest quarter of section 15, township 9 south of range 7 west. This land was located about 1.5 miles southeast of present Star City. In 1860, this land could have been in the northern part of Drew County or the extrema southeast part of Jefferson County. He could have been in either Census. I have found several names in the actual census that weren't in Ancestry.com I did a Rootsweb Land Search, and found this information to be true. What if this is my man?!?! I looked at the 1860 Slave Census Schedule CD for a W.H. Green in Drew and Jefferson County, couldn't find him. He most likely obtained his slaves after the census was taken, the in 1870 of course, there were no slaves census. Now...does anyone have any idea as to where this land could have been located in 1860? I thank all you wonderful Genie's........ God Bless, Dena Jordan

    1. [AGS] What was "The Missouri Raid"?
    2. My great great grandfather's military papers said he fought in the Missouri Raid. I would like to know something about it briefly. Also if there is someone out there that would be willing to do a lookup for James Johnson of 1880 in Petit Jean Township, Logan County to see if James had a middle initial it would help me to try to locate him in 1870 unknown County Alabama. There are so many James in evey surname. James (51) was enumerated with his 30 year old wife, Sarah and James P. 20 Mary F. 16 Andrew 1 all were from Alabama except Sarah. The parents of James was listed as from Georgia. I have written this so that someone will know that it is the right family. Thank you for any assistance possible. Pat

    1. [AGS] Ideas...
    2. Here's what I'm going to do...eliminate one of the William Greens, or see if their one in the same: 1850 Bradley County Census GREEN, Thomas-30-M-Blacksmith-S. Carolina , Mary-45-F-N. Carolina , Rebecca-16-F-N. Carolina , Deborah-15-F-N. Carolina , William HH (Henry Harrison)-9-M-N. Carolina A couple of months ago, I was contacted by a descendent of William HH Green and he mailed me his family group sheet. On it William HH Greens parents were James and Mary (Jacks) Green, so this eliminated Thomas as William's father. Now..I need to find out if Mary Green remarried between 1850-70. I will need help with this from a kind Genie who has access to the marriage records, after that, if she has a new name, I will need a census lookup for 1860 to see if William HH lives in the house with them...this will either confirm that they are both the same, or different, depending if any of his sisters are living with them, provided he is living in the house with his mother still, or if any are living around him...Any volunteers? Thanks All, Deanna.

    1. [AGS] RE: Questions
    2. Went to work today (I only work 4 hours) and couldn't help but think about what Melissa wrote. What if I have been looking for the wrong person all the time? There is no guarantee that William H.H. Green of Smith Township, Bradley County in 1850, is the same as W.H. Green registered with the freedman's bureau in 1866. I think my elusive Mr. Green was missing on the census for 1860. Went to Ancestry.Com and there is no W.H. Green on the census or the slave census schedule in the entire state of Arkansas. I'm going to have to get back with Michelle on this one. I refuse to give up because I know my family didn't just 'appear out of thin air'. Once again, this is what the record looks like. Freedman's Bureau Records 'Labor Contracts' of 1866, field office Monticello, Drew County., Entry 393-Labor Contracts (found by Michelle Hood) Employer Contacts Employee's Age Term of Contract W.H. Green Nannie 63 Rations/Clothing Estes and 15 $3.00/Clothing/Rations infant Mike 10 Rations/Clothing Puss/Victor 8 Rations/Clothing Perry 23 1/10 of all crop raised farm of employer except potatoes/2 suits of clothes. Estes is Easter, and Victor is Victoria. Note that Puss and Victoria are both 8 years old. This was recorded in 1866 and on the 1870 Bradley County, Arkansas census it shows Puss has aged 9 years and Victoria is still 8. There is only a 4 year difference here and Puss had aged 9 years and Victoria hasn't aged at all. Also, on the 1870 census, Puss is stating she was born in S. Carolina, and Victoria states (or rather Mike, head of the house, or Easter by then) is reporting she was born in Arkansas. No W.H. Green on the 1860 as I stated before, but Michelle did find a tax record that listed W.H. Green as paying taxes on 10 slaves, ages over 5 and under 60, valued at $5800. I *think* she said this took place in Bradley County. Sound confusing????? Well, guess what?...It is. Who was this W.H. Green? OK, I'm finished and thanks all for letting me dim your eyes and bend your ears, I need the Genies and the Ancestors help here. Dena.

    1. [AGS] Marshall Photos Needed
    2. I'm working on a history of my HOLSTED line and am trying to locate two photos from the Marshall area (Searcy County) from about 1922 through the mid 1970's. One building was on the square in Marshall and was primarily a feedstore with a few drygoods. It was owned and operated by my aunt Minnie (HOLSTED) BRYAN and her husband Emory BRYAN. The second structure I can only describe as an old two story frame house that was a block off the square. In about 1922 my maternal gandmother Mertey Mae (MARTIN) JACO rented this house and turned it into a rooming house. She used the income to pay the tuition for her two daughters to attend Marshall High School. Those daughters (my mother Eula ( JACO) HOLSTED and Alva (JACO) GRIFFIN graduated May 1926. At about that time my grandmother gave up the house. However, it was still standing sometime in the 1970's when my aunt and mother went back to Marshall for a visit. If anyone has photos of these structures, or even newspaper clippings that show them, I would like to obtain copies for my book. Polly Holsted Rea [email protected]

    1. [AGS] Questions that keep popping in my head...
    2. According to my calculations, my family arrived in Arkansas ca. 1857-58, based on the age of the last child born in S. Carolina. The first record of their names are found on the Freedman's Bureau Records Labor Contracts (information found by Michelle Hood). Dated 1866, Drew County, field office Monticello. Their *employer* was W.H. Green. No first name, I can only guess that it's William H. Green. There is one (1) William H. H. Green on the 1850 Bradley County census as being 9 years old. Why isn't there a 1860 census record for W.H. Green in 1860 either in Bradley or Drew County? By 1870 my family is living in Clay Township, Bradley County, they are the only Green's in that township. You know how 'families stick together' as far as neighbors go. You see a group of 'Childs-Davis, etc.' all living in groups, and here's the Greens, sticking out like a sore thumb, no others around. I need help with the 1860s, what township did this W.H. Green live in? I can't even make a 'chip' in this brick wall. Help! Dena.

    3. Here's an interesting article I found in the New Era Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas May 28, 1864 HOW THE REBELS KEEP WARM During the investment of Chattanooga and the occupation of Lookout Mountain by the enemy, it was a matter of some surprise and speculation, how, when we in the valley were shivering from the cold, the rebel troops on the mountain side, almost naked and without blankets, managed to keep alive. The mystery was solved after the storming of the heights. We found at several points on the slope, where boulders and flat stones had been so laid as to form a bed, hollowed slightly in the middle. Sometimes the stones were laid in an excavation deep enough to shelter from the winds. The width of the bed was the length of a man. They were enough to receive fifteen or twenty persons. In these paved or boulders couches huge fires were built. The wood consumed, the coals and ashes were raked out, and on the warm stony bed the shivering soldiers disposed themselves for sleep. 3. Below is a news item which I transcribed from the Fort Smith Newspaper: New Era Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas May 7, 1864 FROM LITTLE ROCK Little Rock, Ark., April 29th, 1864 Friend Dell: You have doubtless heard of the two trains being captured. I saw a few men who escaped from the latter train. They had just got into Pine Bluff; the train was captured about 35 miles from Pine Bluff. It consisted of 195 government wagons, going for supplies, and some sutler wagons, and 300 refugee wagons, and negro recruits. They were attacked by six or eight thousand rebels under Fagan, and the escort, 1,600, only about 200 of whom were known to have escaped, some 300 known to have been killed or wounded. They left Steele with 5 days half rations. The escort was as follows, 77th Ohio, 43rd Indiana, 36th Iowa, two sections 2nd Missouri Battery, part of the 5th Kansas Cavalry, and part of the 7th Missouri Cavalry. The first train was captured nine miles from Camden. It consisted of 184 forage teams escorted by the 18th Iowa, 1st Kansas Colored, one section Rabb’s Battery, two howitzers, and part of the 2nd, 6th, and 14th Kansas Cavalry, under command of Colonel Williams. They fought like demons, but were overpowered; the 18th Iowa lost over 60 killed, the 1st Colored about one third and 10 officers. I saw men who were with Steele at the time, who said that he heard the firing all the time and did not send reinforcements. Thayer had his cavalry saddled and ready to go but Steele did not or would not order it out. There is great blame attached to Steele and I feel almost certain his is not the right man. No flag of truce went out for three days and not till the rebels sent in and told him to send out and bury his dead niggers, and to send white men, as they would not allow no negroes in their lines. Wounded officers and men suffered and died for three days without attention. I do not kn! ow how true it is, but I more than suspect that Steele is to blame. Colonel Williams had three or four horses killed under him, but he fought his way out and never surrendered a man. The cavalry were nearly all taken or killed. An officer told me he saw who was wounded taken out of an ambulance by the rebels and asked what command he belonged to, he told them the 18th Iowa, they called him a "damned liar", and said he belonged to the 12th Kansas, brigaded with the negroes and knocked his brains out with the butt of a gun. Some of the negroes who were wounded managed to get away, and crawled nine miles to Camden. After they shot all their ammunition away, they went at it with their bayonets and butts of their guns. The officer above mentioned said he saw them fighting after they were down, and one he saw with his teeth in the calf of a rebel’s leg, where he held on till his brains were dashed out. Yours respectfully, G W Sisson. Fran Alverson Warren e-mail: [email protected] 479-369-2703 http://www.crawfordcountyarkansas.net/

    3. Hi Eileen, Can't help with the enumeration dist, but the names remind me of Old Glaise and Oakland Hill... They are 2 communities located very close together, on old 67 highway between Bradford and Newport, in White Co. AR or Jackson Co. On my Grandmother's death cert it lists "Glaze" in Jackson Co in 1939. I have heard it called "Old Glaise". I am not sure which spelling is exactly correct. I know they would be very close to either county line. I spent a lot of time on Oakland Hill as a child in the 60's...Beautiful place, went back for a funeral of a relative a few years ago..hasn't changed much, Thank Goodness! Hope this helps! Carolyn FLOWERS Tucker Eileen wrote: Glazy Pole & Oak Hill Hello List, My Grandmother and Grandfather lived in Arkansas during the 1930's. The communities that they lived in were, Glazy Pole and Oak Hill. I am trying to find them in the 1930 census. Does anyone know of these two places? Do you know what Enumeration District they would be listed in? Thank You For Your Time, Eileen
