Some of you have helped me find out my grandparents were in Jackson Co, Arkansas in 1930 census. Helped me find my aunt's name. Now maybe you can help me with something else. My mom says my grandfather retired from Fort Roots. Don't know how to find anything out about that. Did SSDI search. He is in there. Could only search by his SSN because of a birthday discrepancy. Also, if there are no birth records in the system prior to 1914, then how do I find out about births in 1897 and 1899? I would like to know who my great grandparents are and how many siblings did my grandparents have? I know my grandmother had a sister because my grandmother raised her niece because the niece's mother died 3 days after giving birth to her. But where's her dad? I don't know. That cousin has since died. But anyway, I wanted to get birth certificates to find out thier parents but come to find out I can't do that either. ??? I am at a mental stand still. Can anyone offer me any help?

The best source of information on these families and all other Arkansas families are U. S. Census records. Have you looked in census records beginning in 1930 for these folks? Russell P. Does anyone on the list have a copy of the death index? I'm attempting to locate death dates for: Murray (Murry) Huffman b. abt. 1885 and son Lonnie Huffman b. abt 1909 found in the 1910 census of Lawrence Co.Promise Land Township but not listed in the 1920. Two other sons born 1912 and 1914 are listed with their mother and step father. Thank you Georgia Huffman
Cyd, That was my first impression to the Tackett/Ah-Took-Lee question as well. I also agree with your statement "It is a shame being an Indian had so much stigma attached to it. It denied us the truth to our heritage.. and makes it one heck of a hard search too!" I have been trying to trace my dad's family and get so many mixed answers I'm not sure which ones are truly good leads sometimes. My dad was raised in Comanche, OK. He said he was teased terrible because he didn't fit in with the "white boys" and was from a different tribe than the "Indian boys." He always told us to tell people he was half Irish, half German if they asked us. However, in private conversations at different times before he died he told us he was part Choctaw and possibly part black. I know my grandmother was full blood Irish and was disowned by her family for marrying my grandfather. These are the questions I am currently working on: My grandfather was John Robert Hines b. 1899 in AR d. 1977 in OK. His true race? His parents names? At the time of his death all of his living siblings were near Shreveport, LA and "Faulk?", (maybe they meant Fouke?) AR. I can't seem to find any info on his brothers, Charle Hines or Walton Hines. Was there a Faulk, AR at one time? There is also a sister that has me stumped... "Fatelle Fulcrum" listed as living in Oil City, LA. Any suggestions from any one on her name would be appreciated. I have tried using sound ex on my search, I have tried both Hines and Fulcrum with sound ex. As well as variations like Fat Elle, Estelle, Stella... Any ideas would help. Thanks for reading my ramblings, Bobbie Jo Hines --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail SpamGuard - Read only the mail you want.

Hi Betty, I have the same thing on just about all of my ancestor's land grants in Arkansas as well. I phoned the BLM in Georgia, what the man told me there was that the "Assignee of" column was just the previous owner and there was no way to tell who they were. My rebuttal to that is.. Original Homesteads can only be on property never owned before, So why would they have to have an Assignee column unless it was inherited (or the same person) It is my belief that they are one in the same... here is why, The land in Arkansas was given to the Choctaw nation in exchange for all the Choctaw land in Mississippi (Treaty of Dancing Rabbit, signed by Chief Tubbe) The land in Arkansas was assigned to individual Choctaw persons rather than the whole tribe, but it was still tribal lands not open to white intrusion or ownership. The Choctaw people were smart enough to see that the American government had a hard time keeping their treaties. And these people had lived a long time on their land and didn't want to move again. So when they heard that the land was going to be opened for Homestead, they just went down to the land office and signed in as white men homesteading new land that had been given/sold to them by a Choctaw (who were actually themselves). I hope this makes sense, I have since found many links for my ancestors to the Choctaw nation, some of the brothers and sisters of my ancestors were removed to Oklahoma and were living in Indian Territory even past the 1920s. My great grandfather even had land in OK smack dab in the middle of the Choctaw nation. Yet I have never found them on any roles. I think they had 2 names. Their White name and their Indian name... It is a shame being an Indian had so much stigma attached to it. It denied us the truth to our heritage.. and makes it one heck of a hard search too! : ) Cyd Rawls http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rawls/
Hi Pat, Thanks for responding to my posting. There was also an Allen Jones Polk in Arkansas, who is sometimes confused with my Allen Jefferson Polk, when only the middle initials are used. I believe the Allen "Jones" Polk lived in St. Francis County, while my Allen Jefferson Polk lived in Pike Co/Howard Co. (These counties were merged in the later 1800's.) Ann Billings Rheney

Thanks to those who responded to my message. I have found that Elias Wilson was married to Frances? He was born in 1797 in Ga. Their youngest child was my great-great grandmother. I am descended from Allen Jefferson "Jeff" Polk, b. 1832 in TN, who married an (unknown maiden name) Priest. All their children were born in Pike County, Arkansas (which later became Howard County). On Ancestry.com I found a Robert Priest (another site has him listed as "Robert Lee <Golden> Priest) who married a Caldona "Callie" Polk in Center Point, Howard County, Arkansas. I traced Callie in a book about the Polks that I own and found that she is descended from Cumberland Polk, a cousin of my Jeff Polk. For years I have tried to track down the given name, vital statistics, and parents of Jeff's wife. This posting was the first time I have seen Polks and Priests together in Arkansas - and right in Howard County! I figure that this Polk and Priest are very likely related to mine. (My Jeff had a farm very near Center Point, where Callie married Robert Priest.) I suspect that my Jeff's wife, could possibly be the sister of Robert Priest, as they are very near in age. If you have any additional data on this Priest family, I would so appreciate it if you would share it with me!!! I have searched everywhere I can think of, but have found nothing more. Thanks for any relevant data you would care to share. Ann Billings Rheney
I am trying to find information on Elias Wilson. He shows up in the land records for 1859 & 1860 Lincoln County, Ark. By the 1880 census his wife is widowed and living in her son-in-laws house. I send this query about once a year, so here goes...I have BLM records of land transfers from Ah-Took-Lee to Allin Tackett....and also to other Tacketts in the same family....Does anyone have any idea who Ah-Took-Lee is??? These land transactions were registered in 1846, after the land office opened in Helena, Phillips county, Arkansas....I know the Tacketts were living on these land parcels as early as 1810, so Ah-Took-Lee was probably long gone before 1846, but at some time, this person had actual title to the land...I appreciate any thoughts on this...
