    3. Dear listers I am hoping that someone may be able to assist me. A friend is in a predicament! She was asked many years ago by a friend of hers who lived in Zim if he could use her address in South Africa for a bank account. Recently she received a document from the bank which shows that there are still funds in the account. She knows that he has died but does not know when. She does not know if he had any family who would be entitled to these funds. His P.O. Box was in Marondera, but he also owned a flat in Harare. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how my friend could contact his Executor, assuming that he had an Estate? It would be sad if these funds were lost to a South African bank! Adrian Rowe Durban

    3. Hello Listers, I am new to this list but would like to know if there is a researcher who lives in Bulawayo who would be able to help me. A distant relative has given me the information that there is a grave somewhere near the base of the kopje on which Cecil J Rhodes is buried. This is supposedly the grave of Carl Schulz, my great grandfather. My family lived in Bulawayo in the early 1960's and I recall a visit to the Matobo and C J Rhodes' grave and that my parents stood and read the stone of another grave nearby. What is very clear about that memory is my Mother saying to my Father, "What do you think?" to which Dad responded "Maybe". This makes me think that the information I have been given might be true. I am hoping that there is a researcher living in the Bulawayo area who could verify this for me. And, asking a lot, photograph the tomb stone if it still exists. Thank you Lynette Oakes Surrey, UK

    3. Hello list members, "A happy new years to you all". About 18 months ago I posted an email trying to find a researcher or information on my relations who moved to South Africa and then to Zimbabwe back in early 1900's. You were marvellous in your response and through your help I did get all the information. BUT I would still like to get a photo of the grave of Laura Alice May Hines who died in 1969 in the Selukwe Hospital. Her death certificate says the proposed cemetery of burial is Selukwe. Her husband Ernest David Hines is also buried with her. He died in 1965/66. Can anyone guide me as to who I would contact to ask if they would be willing to take a photo of the grave for me. According to Laura's will there are two small plaques on the grave and an edging around the grave. I believe this is an old cemetery and maybe not used much anymore. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Have a great day, Regards, Hilary Marks. roygirl@alphalink.com.au

    3. Hi Hilary, I found the following entries in the South Africa Archives website: --- Record #1 --- DEPOT TAB SOURCE MHG TYPE LEER SYSTEM 01 REFERENCE 7621/66 PART 1 DESCRIPTION HINES, ERNEST DAVID. STARTING 19650000 ENDING 19650000 REMARKS SURVIVING SPOUSE LAURA ALICE MAY HINES (BORN BUTLER). --- Record #2 --- DEPOT TAB SOURCE MHG TYPE LEER SYSTEM 01 REFERENCE 1895/70 PART 1 DESCRIPTION HINES, LAURA ALICE MAY. STARTING 19690000 ENDING 19690000 You will have to obtain the original records but it appears that Laura and Ernest died in South Africa in 1969 / 1965 and not in Bulawayo (or Selukwe) as you thought. Somebody on this list or on the South Africa list will be able to assist you with obtaining the certificates and you can also look for a freelance researcher on the SA Archives website. I seem to remember that DEPOT = TAB means the archive is in the (old) Transvaal Archive repository - thus in the Johannesburg area - you will need to know this before appointing a researcher. The address for the SA Archives website is: http://www.national.archives.gov.za/index.htm Regards, Gerold. -----Original Message----- From: afr-zimbabwe-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:afr-zimbabwe-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Hilary Marks Sent: 17 June 2010 09:19 AM To: AFR-ZIMBABWE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [AFR-ZIMBABWE] POLLOCK AND HINES. Hi Nikki and all, Can you help me to find the deaths of the above named folk please? Nova Pollock was to have been married and on her wedding day went down with the Black Fever and unfortunately she died a week later. I believe she lived in Bullawayo. This would have been 1819/20. I'd love a copy of her death certificate and the name of the cemetery, grave number, if there is a plaque or head stone on it. She was my Auntie. I'd also like a copy of my great Aunts death certificate Laura (Loll) (Butler) HINES. She was married to Ernest Hines. I think in Bullawayo also. I'd like her death certificate, cemetery where buried and if there is a plaque of headstone. From the little I've been able to discover he died first. There were no children. I think she died about 1963. 10 odd years ago I went through some micro film from Rhodesia (as known when they were alive) but didn't get any results. It was difficult reading but I'm sure I didn't miss it. I'm hoping it will be a lot easier now. Can you help me please? They both came from Australia and that is where I live too. I'm hoping this means something to you but I found an address in my other great auntie's things after she died and this is what I found. Lol (Laura)Hines, P/O Selukive, STH. RHODESIA. This may be important I think. 1. Re: [AFR-ZIMBABWE] "Child Migrant Scheme" in United Kingdom (1830-1970)
    2. Yes, I believe a lot of children were dispatched to Rhodesia for a "better life" - and , from what I've heard, for the most part, they were success stories. Key to the success of the programme in Rhodesia was Kinglsey Fairbridge, to whom there is (was?) a memorial statue at the top of Christmas Pass near Umtali (now Mutare). Many of the "Fairbridge" children (as they were known) and their descendants became captains of Industry and Business in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe. Fairbridge went on to extend the Programme to Australia, and provided scholarships for the children, many of whom were orphanned. For more info, do a google-search on Kingsley Fairbridge, and check www.fairbridge-worldwide.com/ Regards, -Grant Berry. Brisbane, Australia. I'm curious whether researchers on his List are aware of the "Child Migrant Scheme" which took place in the United ingdom and Ireland. If you read up on it, it probably took place for around 150 ears. And, probably "over 150,000" needy children were "shipped out" to the British Colonies. In the mid-1900's many of the children were "flown out." "Over 100,000" of the needy children, teens, and young adults were shipped to anada. In Canada, they became known as "Home Children, Canada" or "British Home hildren." And after trying for 10 years to get recognition for them, this year ecame "2010, the Year of the British Home Child." I found out that my great-grandparents were part of that "Scheme" about 9 years go. I soon joined the "British Home Children" List and then the Board. Stanley" LEWIS and Mary CORKILL were born in Liverpool, Lancashire, England 1860. When the "Liverpool Sheltering Homes" opened in 1873, they went to stay here. Stanley was an only child, but Mary had her 4 younger siblings staying here with her. Stanley had been recently orphaned, but Mary's father was still live. Evan CORKILL was a Mariner, and during the 1870's he made many trips to frica ! In 1874, all children I just mentioned were shipped to Nova Scotia, and hey all went to different families in different towns. Mary's youngest siblings ere boys, 5 and 3 years old. They had an older brother who went to Canada on is own in 1873. The "child migrants" were shipped to Canada between 1860 and 1940. But, the child migrants" were shipped to (or flown to) other British Colonies for a much onger time. I've read that these needy children were shipped to Australia from he 1830's to 1970, possibly. And some went to New Zealand, South Africa, and hodesia, and then Malta. Because I've been learning about the "Child Migrant Scheme" for so long, I know hat there were cases where siblings were separated and some went to Canada and ome went to Australia, for example. And, many parents were still alive and idn't know their child or children were being "shipped out." They thought they ere only putting their child in a Workhouse for a short time. I can offer URL's for the web sites you should know about later in the day. But, hese search-terms will help you find more information: "Child Migrant Scheme" r "British Home Children" or "Home Children, Canada." I know that Zimbabwe is the current name for your country. etty (near Lowell, MA, USA) (on Lists for almost 9 years; now an Admin for 9 Lists) YI: A "British Home Children" List has existed for 10 years, and you can search the rchives for more information. I found out that my great-grandparents were part of that "Scheme" about 9 years ago. I soon joined the "British Home Children" List and then the Board. "Stanley" LEWIS and Mary CORKILL were born in Liverpool, Lancashire, England ~1860. When the "Liverpool Sheltering Homes" opened in 1873, they went to stay there. Stanley was an only child, but Mary had her 4 younger siblings staying there with her. Stanley had been recently orphaned, but Mary's father was still alive. Evan CORKILL was a Mariner, and during the 1870's he made many trips to Africa ! In 1874, all children I just mentioned were shipped to Nova Scotia, and they all went to different families in different towns. Mary's youngest siblings were boys, 5 and 3 years old. They had an older brother who went to Canada on his own in 1873. The "child migrants" were shipped to Canada between 1860 and 1940. But, the "child migrants" were shipped to (or flown to) other British Colonies for a much longer time. I've read that these needy children were shipped to Australia from the 1830's to 1970, possibly. And some went to New Zealand, South Africa, and Rhodesia, and then Malta. Because I've been learning about the "Child Migrant Scheme" for so long, I know that there were cases where siblings were separated and some went to Canada and some went to Australia, for example. And, many parents were still alive and didn't know their child or children were being "shipped out." They thought they were only putting their child in a Workhouse for a short time. I can offer URL's for the web sites you should know about later in the day. But, these search-terms will help you find more information: "Child Migrant Scheme" or "British Home Children" or "Home Children, Canada." I know that Zimbabwe is the current name for your country. Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) (on Lists for almost 9 years; now an Admin for 9 Lists) FYI: A "British Home Children" List has existed for 10 years, and you can search the archives for more information. It's an active List. And, there is a BHC Board. This summer I just started up a new List, which is called "Child Migrants - UK." I have 40 people subscribed so far, and would like to have more people subscribing and offering information.
