I'm curious as to what part of the country your surname comes from? Since my last post here, I think I've found a link to my ancestor James A. Fountain via slave owner (of the plantation, Fountainebleau), William Spotswood Fontaine from King William Co. VA, who ironically, was a descendant of Patrick Henry and Alexander Spotswood, Lt. Governor of VA. Crazy, huh? After viewing a lot of information on their lineage, I saw several instances where the last name was spelled like yours as well. :) Information passed down in my family, explained that the spelling of my last name was orginally Fontaine, but was changed when my great-great-grandparents were freed from slavery and made their way north.
