    3. Hi everyone! Please read this important message and save it for future reference. On Tuesday, August 15, 2006 RootsWeb is preparing to migrate this mailing list to a new list management system called Mailman. The old system was Smartlist and it was fast becoming obsolete. Everything will automatically migrate, so there's nothing you will need to do except to continue sending and receiving messages to the list that are on topic. For list subscribers, the changeover should be smooth. However, there is one significant change you should be aware of. The new system treats both the digest ("-D") and regular delivery ("-L") lists as a single list with two delivery options- digest or regular. This means that the "-L" or "-D" is dropped from the list name within the system so the list becomes AFAM-LEE (NO "L"). The address for sending messages to the list will now be AFAM-LEE@rootsweb.com . Please make a note of this important change. If you use the old address, it might bounce to me, your list administrator. If you're one of those list members who subscribes in both list and digest modes, you will no longer be able to receive both the digest and the regular delivery ("-L") versions of the list at the same email address. If you're subbed in digest mode, you will automatically be moved to list mode, and if your'e in both, you will be in list mode only. If you wish to receive both L and D modes, you will need to use a different e-mail address. One address for List and one for Digest. You can subscribe and unsubscribe from list or digest by sending your "subscribe" or "unsubscribe" message to a single email: AFAM-LEE-request@rootsweb.com. To subscribe to the list digest, continue to send your "subscribe" email to AFAM-LEE-D-request@rootsweb.com. Other changes you might notice include: - Changes to the layout, volume and issue numbers of the digests. - New "welcome" and "goodbye" and other messages. - New message footers. - The "from" email will be different (no "-L") so some messages may be sent to your "junk" folder. If you use filters, you will need to change them. If you have any questions concerning all of the changes, please e-mail me off list at reberkheiser@earthlink.net . Thanks, Rick B List Administrator

    1. Lee of Luxora Arkansas or GoldDust Tennessee
    2. Hello All: I am new to this venue and apologize in advance if I am not communicating the correct way. I am one great granddaughter of Peyton and Irene Lee. I know I have Irene's obituary somewhere filed. Peyton died in 1871. I am starting from scratch and in the beginning stage of a reunion for 2003. Our family has a well developed site but not our "own" as I think you all have. We went through MyFamily.com to set it up and have the tree and everything filled out. Does that count? Peyton had sons Clay, Johnnie, Peyton +, and daughters Mary, Ruth Ann, Gladys, Pecolia, Agnes and Henrietta. Clay married Louella and moved from Luxora Arkansas to Gold Dust Tennessee. Willing to share what I have. Sabrina

    2. GENEALOGY SEARCH ENGINES If you want to do a comprehensive search before narrowing your research to a particular person or family, you may want to check out http://www.genealogysearchengines.com/ which lists all the genealogy search engines. By starting here and bookmarking or printing what you find, you can easily accomplish a month's work in a short amount of time. While these search engines might not index every page out there for a specific surname, they will at least find the majority of them, plus queries posted by other researchers who are tracking the same names. 1. [AFAM-LEE] Obituary Tips
    2. Obituary Tips Obituaries can give you lots of great leads toward where to look for more information (did they list what towns these sisters were in?) however, obituaries are compiled and published when most family members are extremely upset and probably don't have all their information coherently listed. Heavens only knows which family member gave the information -- it could have been her husband who may not have been good with names, or one of her kids who wasn't close with his aunts, or even a grandchild chiming in when the adults were just too upset to notice. Death notices are often compiled by the funeral director by interviewing whichever family members came in to pick out a casket, and that's usually a pretty small group. Obituaries are usually written by a newspaper staff member who may or may not know town society, and it's usually based on just one or two interviews with surviving family members. Obituaries and death notices are only as good as the state of mind of the person interviewed. Maybe they were prepared. Maybe they were upset. One good thing about having a family with mostly daughters is that traditionally, weddings often occured where the bride's family lived, in her church, so there's a good chance if you can trace the family to the same community when the daughters were fairly young, you should be able to dig up a pile of civil and church records to sort through which bride went with which brother -- and some marriage certificates also include ages, so even if the brides -- or grooms -- chose to use middle or nicknames, you may be able to sort through them more easily. You might also be surprised to find second and third marriages for one or more of the sisters -- women just didn't stay unmarried long ago, especially if they had kids! One other suggestion for digging: Depending on how long-lived the sisters were, if they were around 70-80 when they passed on, you may be able to find coverage of their 50th wedding anniversaries in various church, community or social publications. At least this information will be compiled from a living sister's interview, so the information might be more credible -- unless the sister was actively bending the truth, which is always a possibility Blessings, George "DaPicMoocher" Jenkins Jenkins-Jeffries-Lee Family Page - http://www.geocities.com/geojenk Jenkins-Jeffries-Lee Family Picture Page - http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~geojenk/index.html

    1. [AFAM-LEE] Telephone Tip
    2. CHECKING TELEPHONE DIRECTORIES If you can't seem to track down uncommon surnames, try to locate them in the phone directories of the town, state, or country you're focusing on. This might seem like looking for a needle in a haystack, but it isn't as bad as you think. In fact, the phone directory for some countries, such as Ireland, is thinner than the phone directory for many American cities. A good resource for phone directories on the Internet is http://www.teldir.com/eng/namc/us/pn Once you locate a name and an address, resort to the old-fashioned method and write a letter explaining your genealogical search and what you're trying to accomplish. I once wrote to all the Simons in the Belleview, Illinois, and St. Louis areas (26 of them!) and received only one reply. However, that reply was from the granddaughter of my great-great grandfather, and she had resources that I didn't! Sometimes, that needle in a haystack pays off! 1. [AFAM-LEE] Picture of Fannie Virginia Casseopia Lawrence-Age 6
    2. Greetings, You know the drill by now. :) While rummaging on E-Bay I found the most darling picture of a slave girl. I ahemmmm have it on my computer by some technological miracle. I will have this picture in my "Photo ID Service" section which is on my web page shortly. At the bottom of the pic it reads: Fannie Virginia Casseopia Lawrence A redeemed slave child, 5 years of age. Redeemed in Virginia, by Catharine S. Lawrence; baptized in Brooklyn; at Plymouth Church, by Henry Ward Beecher, May 1863. Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year of 1863, by C.S. Lawrence, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the United States, for the Southern District of New York. On the back of the picture is: Kellogg Brothers Photographers 279 Main Street Hartford, Ct. If anyone has interest in this pic, please contact me. 1. [AFAM-LEE] Integrity of information
    2. Greetings, All of us, at one time or another has run into conflicting information during our research. Here are some things to think about during the evaluation process: Integrity of Information On every source you need to consider how it was created. Birth certificates were usually completed close to the event by hospital, doctors and/or parents and places and dates should be very accurate. Names should also be accurate, but there are errors sometimes. Marrage certificates are usually completed by the people involved and names, places and dates are usually accurate. Death certificates are usually completed by a relative that may not know all the facts and may not be in the best mental state of mind while providing information. Children may often be unsure of parents exact place of birth or other datails about their parents. Younger siblings may not know the exact place where an older sibling was born so errors do get on death certificates. Grave stones are often made months or years after the fact and sometimes the stone cutters make errors. Always consider when and how the record was created and who provided the information. Generally information provided at the time of the event by the people involved is most accurate. Records created after the fact or by uninvolved people are generally less accurate and the longer the time since the event the greater chance of error. Published information always has a chance of error in transcription, typing or interpertation. The web has allowed many more people to publish their family information and allowed more errors to be replicated by people that don't verify information they get from published sources. Documentation and verification with original records is the best way to insure your information is accurate. Always consider the sources and how the record was created in evaluating what information you should consider as fact. 2. AFRICAN-AMERICAN RESEARCH African-American genealogy is probably one of the most difficult areas to research. A valuable book that gives you clues on where to begin searching is "Finding a Place Called Home--Guide to African American Genealogy and Historical Identity." Written by Dee Parmer Woodtor, Ph.D., the paperback was published in November 1999. The ISBN number is 0-375-70843-X. If you can't find this treasure at the bookstore, check with the Library of Congress or a larger library for interlibrary loan information. These records are typically found in legal libraries of law schools, large legal firms, and state governments. Has anyone in your family ever contested a will? Well, this is where that wealth of information will be found. I understand a lot more of these are going online, too. Here are some links to explore further; the last a link to Everton for reprints.
