    1. [ADVANRES] trying to track down a couple c1850s

    3. Hello, I have a family mystery I’m trying to crack. My ancestor Samuel Matthews had three children with a lady named Eliza who gave her surname interchangeably as Grey/Gray or Rowe. Grey/Gray was also used as a middle name by all three of her children at some point in their future lives. She died young though and was buried as Samuel’s ‘wife’ however I’ve never been able to find an actual marriage for them. Samuel was born about 1834 in Cornwall and he moved to St James Westminster some time in the mid 1850’s as either an apprentice tailor or a tailor in his own right (he was an apprentice in 1851). Eliza was a little older than he was, her estimated year of birth according to her age at death was 1825. He had two children with Eliza in St James Westminster (Ellen Louisa Grey 1856 and Francis Maude 1857). They moved to Norfolk after that and had one more child together. The only possible clue I have come across is that in 1851 an Eliza Grey lived in St James Westminster and was the wife of a Tailor named Walter Grey. They had no children at the time. I wondered if perhaps Samuel went to work with Walter, and then Walter passed away and Samuel took over the business with Eliza but that’s just a theory. So far I haven’t been able to find out anything more about Walter and Eliza, not even a match for a marriage for them either. Walter and Eliza were recorded as being born in Scotland in the census 1851. So I’m left trying to chase down two marriages now and I’m just going around any circles. Any ideas or advice for me? Can I find out any more about Walter through business records of some kind? I’m not sure what else to try, Thanks, Tam Sent from Mail for Windows 10
