Now we know what the problem was...what a shame. If your grandmother has a niece, she must be from your grandfather's side? My Oma also has a niece named Marion in Georgia, last I heard. I never knew my dad's grandparents' names...Raphael (interesting female name) and possibly Adolph. That one would make sense. My mother (who is Eddie's 2nd wife) is Ruth. His first wife's name was Elinor. Her nickname was "E", which must be what you are remembering with Eve....you have a good memory! When you would go to Flushing to visit, was German or English spoken in the house? My dad was fluent in speaking, but I don't think so much in reading or writing. Are you moving close to where you are now? Sounds like it's been a while since you've seen your Oma's things that are packed up...maybe you'll come across some forgotten treasures. She died young of a drug overdose. My Oma has a neice by her in Isreal. Her name is Marion Elsbach, and she has 2 children. We last heard from her when Oma died. My Oma had all of her jewelry as she lived on a kibbutz and could not have any of that stuff. We wanted her to have it but she said she could not take it. Adi and Hanna mother was named Raphael. I think their father was named Adolph. I have to ask my Mom. He was a sucessful retailer in Germany. After playing with Adi's Lumpi we got our own minature dashund and named him Lumpi as well. My Grandmother was a nurses aid as well. My Opa was a dermatologist. After Opa died Oma traveled extensively through out Europe as a nurses aid. Is your mother named Eve? I remember Eddie had a wife named Eve. My Oma had many German artifacts as well. When she died in 1986 all of the grandchildren were given all of the artifacts. I have many things from my Oma. Adi obtained restitution for my Oma as well.I did all of her finances as she grew older. She was a wonderful loving Oma, and a marvelous cook. I am in the process of moving and have not unpacked my Oma's memorabelia yet.If I find anything that might be of interest I will let you know. We had one for a few years until Lumpi chewed her way out of the house. Last Lumpi he had. Oma was wonderful...I remember her doing headstands well into her 60's and maybe even older. I loved their house on Long Boat...it was filled with furniture and art from Germany, rugs, on a canal and had a triangular shaped pool. My mom knows a cousin on Oma's side and remembers hearing about an Eva on my dad's, but isn't sure of the last name. Family history you may or may not know: When Oma and Opa came to this country, Opa enrolled in NYU night school to learn English. He had been an attorney in Germany and earned a graduate degree in this country, maybe in finance or something as he was treasurer (?) of a Wall Street company. At the same time he opened a photo shop to support the family. Oma was some kind of a nurse's aide to also bring in money. Opa was responsible for reparations in the southeastern USA to help Jews in reclaiming assets taken from them in Germany. Occasionally he would have to go to Berlin to argue his cases in court. Oma had said she would never set foot in Germany again and, when he had to go back, would meet him in France. Once while in court, Opa came across the man who had turned in Oma (and her family?) for being Jewish. Opa and this man recognized each other...the man came over to say hello and Opa spit in his face, saying "this is for turning in my wife". Hanna and Adi - do you know their parents' names and were there any other siblings? Michelle Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I don't remember my dad or Opa ever mentioning any relatives on that side (not to say they didn't, I just don't remember). What was your mother's name? When did they arrive here? When my dad and his parents came to this country, they settled in Flushing. The way I heard it, Opa had been the district attorney in Berlin and in that position had gotten word of what was going on and got the family out. My dad was originally in the insurance business and he and his first wife lived near Chicago. They had 3 children. My mom married Ed in 1973 and we moved to Florida. Oma and Opa were already living in Long Boat Key, near Sarasota. Opa died in 1976 and Oma in 1981. Michelle Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My grandmother and your grandfather were siblings. Yes, Adi got my grandmother and her husband and my mother out of Germany. I have the original paperwork of their coming to America. I met your Dad, as we spent much time in Queens with Adi,and Elizabeth and Eddie was there. I do not remember if I met Eddies wife. We saw many pictures of Eddie and his family at my grandmothers, and Adi's. I remember he used to work in the insurance industry. Your Dad was my mothers cousin. I live in New York City. I have 2 siblings now, as one has passed away. Pamela Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. How did you know he had 5 kids? Did your grandmother make it out of Germany? My dad and his parents arrived in this country (at Ellis Island on the S.S. President Roosevelt) 70 years ago yesterday (July 3, 1937). I have found some information on that at ancestry.com, although my dad always said they arrived on 4th of July. Yes, I am in touch with my siblings and I am in Florida. Where are you? Whatever information I may be able to give you would only be pertaining to my grandparents (I only knew my Opa as Alfred - I think he dropped the Adolf once they came to this country) and dad but I'm happy to share whatever I can.
