    3. Hello Brian & all my other possible cousins- I went to one of my favorite sites - http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html - and tried the variant spelling "Glouster" and hit paydirt! Looks like it is located in Athens Co. I visit this site often for this type of search as they can search for various spellings and a number of other interesting fields. You will also have a chance to look at detailed maps of the state and your city! Hope that this helps! 3. I just ran into this wonderful website and have to share it: http://www.umdl.umich.edu/moa/ "Making of America" has scanned images of pages from 1,600 books and 50,000 journal articles from the 19th century. And they're searchable too. I plugged ADRIAN into the search and found more than 1,000 hits of course. Not quite practical to look through them all. But you might have better luck if you can add a first name. ADRAIN researchers will find manageable hits in 14 publications. When you go to the listing of each book, you can also search within them for the page and pull up the scanned image. Most of us won't find our names, but I'm sure there's a wealth of historical information here that can help your research. Jodi

    3. I believe everyone who subscribes to a Rootsweb list is subscribed to Rootsweb Review, so you probably saw the brief announcement about the threaded archives. I just wanted to bring attention to it, because it's a big improvement for how to search past messages. Go to: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ You'll need to create a password first, as the instructions tell you (a pain-in-the-neck extra step, but one that gives us even more protection against solicitors pulling e-mail address lists off of Rootsweb!) When you search for the "Adrian" name or variations now, you'll be able to see hits from ours and any other lists that have a mention (as long as the listowner has signed up for this feature). With our particular name, it's not necessarily a good thing for volume, but it might help us find some distant, slightly-connected relations who have more information. Any new finds to share from anyone's lines? Jodi [email protected]

    1. A new bug
    2. JODI REIFSNYDER
    3. You may have already heard about this, but the e-mail wording of this particular computer "bug" sounds like it could be especially annoying to genealogists who may too easily trust documents sent along to them from distant cousins. It's called "Melissa." I cannot use the "V"-word or this message will not go through to you. Rootsweb does not allow attachments on any lists, in part as protection for subscribers from catching a computer "V". It also has filters so that hoax warnings won't bother list members. One of the reasons I love Rootsweb! Most warnings are hoaxes, so please do not share any with the list without letting me know what you want to send first. I can check them out to verify whether or not they are true and will share it if it is significant to researchers. This one is true, and, as I said, I think it's worth sharing. You can read about it at: http://www.zdnet.com/pcweek/stories/news/0,4153,2233030,00.html For more information in case you receive, and unknowingly open, the file, you can go to: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/mailissa.html The most important message, of course, is to be careful about opening attachments even when you know the person who sent them. Powers, also born in Wi. They ended up in King County, Seattle, Washington and had a daughter Eleanor in 1909, and a son Russell in 1911. I know this is a long shot, but it took 5 hours for my last long shot to work out in another mailing list for another name, so you can't blame a girl for trying! :o) Thanks, Sherilyn

    1. Adrians in South Dakota
    2. Bart Adrian
    3. Hi to all the Adrians out there. I didn't know it was such a common name until I came here. I was surprised about all the other origins of the name and so far there haven't been any Mennonite Adrians so will contribute my early family history in hopes of finding relatives. I am especially interested in trying to find common ties back in Prussia before the Mennonites moved to Russia in the early 1800s. If anyone is interested in more detail, they can check at the home page <http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/a/d/r/Barton-W-Adrian/index.html>. The earliest Adrian of my family that I have been able to determine is Peter Dirk Adrian b1781. The Adrians were Mennonites in Prussia. Some sources seem to indicate that they may have been from the Netherlands and were part of the Mennonites that moved back and forth between the Netherlands and Prussia. Another source indicates that the Adrians originated in the region of the upper Vistula River in Prussia. Peter was married to Helena Adrian (not known if this was a maiden or married name) Peter Adrian moved with his family to the Molotschna Colonies if Russia in the 1820s. They were part of the great migrations known as Germans from Russia. Children of Peter and Helena were: Sara Adrian abt 1815 Jacob Adrian abt 1817 Maria Adrian abt 1817 Heinrich Adrian abt 1824 Peter Dirk Adrian June 10, 1825 Anna Adrian abt 1830 Peter Dirk Adrian b1825 married Anna Frey March 3, 1846 and immigrated to the United States in 1875 from Russia. Their children were: Anna Adrian b1848 died in Russia Peter P Adrian b1850 Helena Adrian b1852 Heinrich Peter Adrian b1854 Jacob P Adrian b1857 Sarah Adrian b1859 Johann Adrian b1860 died in Russia Johann Adrian b1865 Benjamin Peter Adrian b1868 Elizabeth Adrian b1876 Isaak Adrian b 1871 Peter P Adrian b1850 moved to Kansas where there are many descendants. Heinrich Peter b 1854 married Helena Wiebe and moved to Canada. She died in Canada and Heinrich later moved to California. There are many descendants still in Saskatchewan. Johann (John) b 1865 moved to Minnesota and was the ancestor of the many Adrians in southern Minnesota. Benjamin Peter Adrian b1868 moved to California. Jacob P Adrian b1857 stayed in South Dakota and married Maria Loewen. Their children were: Jacob J Adrian b1881 Cornelius Adrian b1883 Mary Adrian b1885 Peter Adrian b1888 Margareta Adrian b1891 Sara Adrian b1895 Peter J Adrian b1899 Isaac Adrian b 1901 The Adrians from southeast South Dakota are all descended from Jacob P and Peter J. There is another branch of Adrians that moved to southeast South Dakota from the Molotschna Colonies as well. Heinrich Adrian b1851 is well known in the Mennonite Brethren Church and also documented in Robert Guenther’s book Passionate Possessions of Faith. He descended from Heinrich Adrian b1822 and Heinrich Jacob Adrian b1779. My dad's great aunt always said, “The Adrians from Parker (South Dakota) were not related”. Obviously with the similar immigration from Prussia, moving to the same Molotschna Colonies, immigrating to the same area of the U.S. at about the same time and intermarriage with the same surnames, I suspect that the two lines are related back in Prussia, but have not been able to put that together. With the many names of Loewen and Frey in the family tree, I would welcome correspondence concerning those family lines as well. I look forward to exchanging further information. 3. My Adrian grandfather, Carl Julius Adrian b 1869 in Bannesdorf, Fehmarn Island, Germany. His father was Heinrich Adrian. These Adrians with spouse, sibs, an uncle Jacob Adrian, emigrated from Fehmarn Island to Davenport Iowa ~< 1810. some lived in Holstein Iowa for while. The Adrians did not have deep roots in Fehmarn Island but married into Fehmarn families. They came from Grossenbrode, Schleswig-Holstein, which is a city in mainland northeastern Germany, on the Fehmarn Strait across from Fehmarn Island. The genealogy of the Fehmarn Adrians is on the Fehmarn Island net site http://www.accesspro.net/fehmarn Fehmarn island was sometimes Danish territory, sometimes German, and was caught in much conflict. The Fehmarn Islanders were quite insular. OTHER UNRELATED ADRIANS I have come across several other Adrians, not mine. On the Wuertenberg Emigration Index web site several Adrions/families of Adrions are listed, who migrated to N America. One family is from Sulz and Freudenstadt, which I believe is in Switzerland near Germany (Black Forrest). The other family is from Obendorf, Austria near Germany (near Munich). Bothe sets are from S. Germany. I read on a web site that Adrians from Ireland Americanized their name from O'Drean and variants thereof. Also, I live close to the MD Archives, visit it often, and noticed the colonial Adrians (1700's) in the Baltimore area. Don't know where they came from. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Tuesday, March 16, 1999 11:16 AM Subject: ADRIAN-D Digest V99 #11

Germany, France, Spain, and England were all part of the Roman Empire and all show evidence of having Adrian's who eventually emmigrated to the US. (Surprisingly, I've yet to hear of one from Italy). Perhaps we are all connected, or perhaps not. But the name seems rare enough in the US that it becomes easy to feel a kindred to other Adrian's that one encounters. Have fun. 2. Patty Fagan
    3. Hi, per Jodi's suggestion, I've dipped into the ADRIAN archive and I must say I'm amazed at the variety of origins of this name. It must have sprung from several sources. Mine are from Baccarat, Meurthe-et-Moselle, and a few towns along the Meurthe: Thiaville and Lachappele. For those with French maps, Baccarat is southeast of Nancy. in the Alsace Lorraine area of France, bordering Germany. If my name has a German origin, it would be prior to the line I know. The known direct line is 1. Francoise ADRIAN b. ca. 1810 m. Victoire BOYE b. 1809?, Bertrichamps? 2. Celestine ADRIAN b. 1841, Thiaville, m. 1861 Baccarat, d. 1918 Baccarat m. Hubert LAURENT b. 1839, Deneurve, d. 1905, Baccarat Celestine had several ADRIAN siblings, one of whom immigrated to NY 3. Marie Eugenie LAURENT b. 1862, Baccarat, imm ca. 1880 to NYC, d. 1943, Brooklyn m. ca 1884, Thomas COLLINS (1861-1909), Brooklyn, buried at Holy Cross, Brooklyn I also know of several LAURENT siblings, none of whom immigrated #3, Eugenie LAURENT COLLINS, was my great-grandmother. Her father and some of her ADRIAN and LAURENT uncles worked at the crystalery in Baccarat. At 18, she immigrated to NYC and then married and moved to Brooklyn. She did not have a great number of descendants, but all are known to me and most have remained...er...45 minutes from Broadway. I've also done some cursory research on her uncle Edouard ADRIAN (1838-1916), after I found his obituary among her papers. The young Edouard was a "taileur" at the Baccarat crystalery and immigrated in 1874 with his wife and children (nine, I believe) to Woodhaven, Queens, NY. Woodhaven was home to an enclave of French immigrants, drawn to work at the Grosjean Company, a tinware factory built during the 1850s by another French immigrant. Edouard and his wife died in 1916 and 1917, and are buried at Evergreen Cemetery. They were survived by only two children, of the original nine, Josephine GLESSING and a Mrs E. COOK. Mrs GLESSING had seven children, four of whom were still alive in 1910. The ADRIANS also had a son named Simon, but I only know of his birth in Baccarat. Well, that's it. I'll be amazed if there are any connections, but I wanted to try. Thanks to Jodi for creating this list! Patty Fagan (Boston) [email protected]

    3. For Jodi: Thanks for creating and managing the ADRIAN mailing list. I have found many of the postings by list members to be interesting and helpful. >For Mitchell and Bob : >... Both of you sent me information on your lines that trace back to >David ADRIAN (ADRON) in South Carolina who immigrated from Germany. I >just want to make sure that you know each other Dr. Mitchell ADRIAN and I have been in contact and have exchanged information of our ADRIAN line. Thanks for facilitating our contact. For all: I am a descendant of David ADRIAN (spelled ADORAN in the first South Carolina census), who immigrated to America about 1769. He and some of his several sons migrated westward from South Carolina to Alabama and Georgia. I am descended from his grandson, John David German ADRIAN, who accompanied and served as interpreter for the Cherokees on their trek on the Trail of Tears from Georgia to the Indian Territory in 1838 and 1839. He later moved to Smith County, Texas, and sired a considerable progeny, many of whom live in eastern and central Texas. My maternal grandmother was the granddaughter of John David German ADRIAN. The below linear ahnentafel shows her lineage to David ADRIAN. While I was visiting my 91-year-old mother in Oklahoma City recently, she told me that an uncle or cousin on her ADRIAN side many years ago had a professional genealogist research their family line. She said that he traced it back to HADRIAN, Emperor of Rome, and that the name had been shortened from HADRIAN to ADRIAN. Unfortunately, she was not certain of the identity of the relative who had the research done, and I have not been able to find any trace of the research. Our alleged relationship to the Emperor of Rome may just be a bit fanciful, but I know that Emperor HADRIAN was a Spaniard (Spain was part of the Roman Empire), and, in my perusal of directories and records searching for ADRIANs in Texas, I have found many listings of people with the ADRIAN surname and Spanish given names, i, e,. Jose Fernando ADRIAN, etc. I have been interested in recent postings on this list which appear to add credence to our supposed descent from HADRIAN. I would be grateful to hear from anyone with information of David ADRIAN or his possible relatives and will provide to any interested researcher additional information of my ADRIAN line, including a Word 97 document file listing those descendants of David ADRIAN of whom I have information.
